Bought some doors, fenders, and other body parts to start the project this spring
Today I bought used complete power oem doors, fenders, new supersized cab corners and complete rocker panel for $400. Couple weeks ago, I bought a solid bed for the truck as well.
One of the doors I am a bit concerned about. The lower skin is in filler/primer. There is actually a crack in the filler. I think I am going to have to remove the filler and see what is up. What is the best way to remove filler? Just sand it away with some 32 grit? I'm hoping it is workable because don't cracks usually mean too much filler? Also, the cab corners I received are huge. I don't think that much of the corners need to be replaced but my father made a good point. Where the oem molding is, is where the new cab corner replacement would mate. The molding would further hide any evidence of cab corner replacement. Or, should I trim the new replacements for only what is needed? Any helpful tips on the rocker replacement? It's a full replacement for the driver's side. I don't know much about body work but this is what I have learned. Fiberglass filler is to be used where any welding took place. Such as the cab corners/rocker replacement. I also learned basic things like apply several thin coats, not thick coats of filler. Sand in all different directions starting with 32 grit, 80, and then featheredge 150 with a DA. Then apply glaze putty and sand with around 150-180. Golfball size of filler to 1'' of hardener. Does it sound like I am on the right track? Basically, the only areas I really need to worry about filler are the cab corner/rocker replacement areas, and that one door I am nervous about since it already has filler applied with a crack in it. Besides that, no filler is really needed on this project. Any other suggestions are appreciated.
