Has anyone fixed a rusted core support? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have had no luck in finding a nice core support for my '68 project. This is the best one I have. Has anyone tried to fix one like this? Should I trash it and get an aftermarket piece?

Also, did they cut the holes for the air lines like this from the factory? Looks kind of hacked to me.

I would just get an aftermarket from Tim Christian in TN if he's close to you...

I'd say hold off until you can go to a big car show/swap meet. My dad bought a 67/68 support from a vendor at Carlisle for $125. Seemed to be pretty good quality. We also saw a couple rust free originals for $100-150. Vendors tend to drop their price a little at shows, no shipping, etc.

If you've got a welder and some metal, yours looks repairable.

they are close enough to pick up-so there wouldnt be a shipping charge

How's the fit of the aftermarket supports? I know a lot of people don't like the aftermarket fenders.

I havent bought one-so dont know on quality or fitment-I have bought a few minor items from them because their close to me

I have seen a patch panel for the area under the battery, can't say who has them though.

Really??? Sweet! I have yet to see one! Let us know if you find out who had it. Mine needs some work in the same area, otherwise, my core support is really nice.

I replaced my front fenders, inner fenders, & core support (yep, I wrecked my truck, but I did salvage the hood!) with Tri-Plus repops.

After reading all the horror stories about using replacement parts, I surprised how well things went together.

I still have a lot of adjusting to do, but honestly, all in all; things went back together a lot easier than I figured they would.

That's just my experience, I can't comment on how other folks did.

I repaired mine on Sweet Pea. It was basically the usual rust areas...Was really no big deal to fix....More time was spent to rust proof everything really, a lot of double walls.......I think i took pics in my build thread............

I know the oe part is probably made with thicker gauge metal but I believe I will go with a complete new part so as to eliminate all rust concerns. Maybe the new parts will last at least half as long as the original ones.

I put the brothers patch in mine and it was pretty easy to do.I have a basically new aftermarket core support,but wasn't real happy with the massaging I had to do to get the battery box to fit and didn't want the same problems with the fenders,inner fenders etc. I figured since all this stuff came off the original core support it would be a lot less trouble to assemble with the original support.
