new engine ideas
I am swapping out a chevy 6 in my 72 c10 for a more fuel efficient engine. Anyone got a suggestion on something that will push the truck around but still get better gas mileage? Hunter43

Re: new engine ideas
5.3 LSX with a 6 speed automatic would be sweet, even sweeter if you added a gear vendors to make it a 12 speed and put paddle shifters on it

Re: new engine ideas
Any gen 3 (LSx) and it's matching overdrive trans. Those motors just make nice power and don't eat a lot of fuel.

Re: new engine ideas
How much money you got?
Cheapest route (assuming it runs well) is to back the I-6 with a 700R or 5 speed (seems to be more popular with the straight six crowd.) The 4.3 with a 5spd or 700R is another good option. Personally, if I had the extra $$$, I'd install a 5.3/4L60. 290 HP stock, fuel injection, OD transmission, it's just a little pricey for the set up and all the stuff to make everything work together. HOWEVER, if you do a lot of "city driving," under 45mph or so, you won't see much of a difference with any of these set-ups.

Re: new engine ideas
MAST motorsports put their L92 crate motor and the 6L80 trans in a '68 short bed, they got 17 MPG on the power tour, and that motor puts out 525 horses

Re: new engine ideas
I would like to drop in a 4 cylinder direct injection ecotec. VVT and fuel sipping economy, with my granny tranny, my c30 will still pull like a bull.

That's cruising down the highway. It probably only gets 11-12 mpg in "city" driving. The 6.2L 6L60 Denalis are rated at 12mpg with a 3.42 rear gear. It most likely also requires premium fuel.

Re: new engine ideas
In theory, a larger engine in a smaller body will use less fuel to move it....in theory. The truth is that we tend to like the idea of a bigger engine and then we flog the crap out of it, just for tickles and grins....
My '96 GMC has a 4.3/AOD and I get about 17MPG around town, on average. Is that the kind of improvement you want....if it is an improvement? An acquaintance of mine used to race dirt track with motors that were built to be claimed (I think that is the right term). Anyway, he would start with a 4.3, add a pair of heads from a 229 V-6, do a little "finaglin'" and a little bit of exhaust work to pair up the right cylinders in order to achieve a good scavenging effect, then clean up on the track. So, the 4.3 can be made to run, and with a good transmission/final drive ratio, also made to be somewhat economical. Would I put one in my truck? What, and give up my V-8? Never happen, GI!!
