Merlin Ovals vs. 049's
Is anyone running the merlin oval ports? I was wondering if I should purchase a used set of bare merlins for $300 and putting new valves and springs in them rather than doing work to my 049's. Anyone got any flow numbers that I can compare? Opinions wanted. Thanks in advance.

That was the first time I saw that list. Used to get them from Purple Sage Trading post.
The folks at World are pretty decent. I purchased my heads used, and they were more than happy to help. Good luck- -Todd

Re: Merlin Ovals vs. 049's
I had bowl ported 049s on the 427 in my Chevelle, went to Merlin ovals and gained nothing at the strip, fresh motor, almost the same cam, went form OLD Performer intake to Performer RPM Q-Jet and car ran the same ET.
I would still pay $300 for good Merlin cores though... A more radical combo would see the gains. Mine is a mid 12 second car. |

Re: Merlin Ovals vs. 049's
The heads I am looking at had broke the valves so in 1 cylinder on one head and 2 cylinders on the other, there are divits in the combustion chamber. He said he took them to a machine shop and had them pressure tested and the guides fixed in the 3 cylinders. Do you still think they would be worth it?
