1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
Hello all,
I have the oportunity to pick up a 99 silverado for 5K (more like 4.5) It has just under 200K miles, mainly highway. its in beautiful shape and was driven by a salseman. Its the LT ext cab version with the 6L V8 and its loaded. I figure the engine will fail eventually but considering I will drive it less than 2K a year I was just wondering what you guys thought. Much Thanks! Last edited by redahtamn; 02-03-2009 at 10:39 PM. Reason: forgot info |

Re: 1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
that is wayyyy to much for that...
ill give you an example, my friend bought a 99 1500 w/ a 5.3 back in 04 it had 40xxx mi on it, and he gave 5200$$...it was never wrecked and was in good shape.....id say pass IMO the going rate for 99NBS trucks are in the upper 3k-7k range.... just my thoughts tho. I'd offer 4. but even so, if it's rust free and in good mechanical shape, buy it. my '05 will be in the 200k club before too long, but I have a feeling I won't be taking the stock motor and trans to that milestone. the 6.0 is a little beefier though.

Re: 1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
I saw an '05 or '06 2500 4x4 regular cab 6L that had 177k on it recently.
I think they were asking $5500. The GMC dealer right by me has an '06 Chev 2500HD 2wd regular cab with 55k for $8000. Not sure where these engines are giving up at but I have seen early 90's trucks with similar miles with a similar asking price. To the OP, if it's in nice shape and is what your looking for then go for it. The engines are getting to be fairly cheap used so the parts are becoming available reasonably.

Re: 1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
I think It's too much for a 200K truck that's 10 years old . Right now used truck prices are down at (least in my area) with a lot of good deals to be found . I recently bought a 2006 silverado regular cab long bed , in good condition but with 132K for $2700. This was from a private party . I am now seeing so many good deals , that I am thinking of selling the 2006 I just bought to buy an even better truck .

All depends are where your at. Those of us in the southern areas will find that way too much. Rust belt folks, or like you in the Northwest, it's an OK price if it is in good shape other than the mileage. The vortec trucks seem to be good for well beyond 200K if maintained.
I'd try for as low as I can, but if it is as you describe then it is not a bad deal.

Re: 1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
Are you sure on the 6.0L? GM didn't offer the 6.0L until 2001 and even then it was limited to HD trucks. It is probably a 5.3. Look at the Emission Control sticker on the plastic radiator cover when you pop the hood. The engine size is listed in the upper left hand corner. Is it a 1500? 2wd or 4wd?
I'd worry about the tranny going south before I worried about the motor. Also, is this the 99+ body style, or the square bodied 88-98 body style. There was a "99 classic" that was a square body style too.

Re: 1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
its the newer body style, 2500, ext cab, 4wd, tow package and it has the 6.0 L Vortec 6000 (SFI). being a highway vehicle (traveled between washington and montana) I am not too worried about the tranny..... I just dont know how long these engines last. found a website though for these engines if anyone is interested http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f22/
also here is the official release from GM detailing the possible options for that year. http://media.gm.com/ca/gm/en/product...Silverado.html much thanks, mike Last edited by redahtamn; 02-04-2009 at 08:26 PM. Reason: additional info |

I need a better info source It gets confusing when GM offered a 99 classic body style for the 1500's, and kept the 2500/3500 "old body style" available until 2000. GM-trucks.com is also a really good place for info.

Re: 1999 silverado 200k miles; buy for 5K?
My 99 5.3 xcab 2wd 3/4 at 145k is rusty in the rockers and worth no more than 3500. A rust free one is aout $4500 here in MI. I'd say offer $4k.
If you get it change the fluids an dintake gaskets and it should be good for a long time.
