First,... this is not a slam against ECE or powdercoaters in general.
I purchased a 6" drop kit, shock re-loactors, and SuperTrack bar from ECE years ago for my '71 swb project truck. (now getting parted out)
Anyway,... I sold my bed to 72BlckButy last year and when I removed it,... this is what I found. This set up has about 150 miles on it. That's all.
I've had this same stuff from ECE on my 2wd blazer since 2004 and it looks like new.
I know "production" powdercoating is a little different than the guys that do quality work,... but I couldn't believe it. The truck sat outside but was never driven. All of this was covered from the weather by the bed until I removed it to sell. Then it was cover with a tarp,... but by that time it wass too late. The Track Bar had huge flakes of coating falling off of it.
I still like powdercoating, (I even shipped a few items to Txfirefighter Saturday to coat for me),... so what do you think caused this? Poor prep? Rusty metal?
Again,... not a slam on ECE,... I just wanted your opinions.
I'm going to blast and paint this stuff for my '69 swb.

where was it driven??? looks like the deep south (houston, florida, louisana??) id say poor prep is the cause.....that looks real bad too..

^ I agree, terrible prep job. I have some powder coated stuff that you can't hardly knock off with a grinder. That stuff should have been sandblasted, sure looks like it was powder coated as-is.

Never in the salt, snow or rain. I basically installed it,... then the truck sat while I worked on my other projects. That's why I can't understand it.
I'm going to beadblast the parts and take a closer look at them. I may need a new track bar. The threads look kinda crappy.

The flip kit i bought from DJM did the same thing. I wish it would all fall off though cause its that ugly black/silver marble.

even when I install new suspension parts that have powdercoating, I'll hit it with some PPG true black undercoating....... just to be safe.

I remember Nate telling me about that thing. ewwwww.

Who's to say that it was indeed powder-coated....maybe "years ago" in was just spray on enamel???

I think when I purchased the kit it was advertised as being powdercoated. I have spray-bombed parts that held up better than that. I did the spring retainers in Rustoleum black, at the same time,... and they still look good.

That is weird. My ECE super track bar has literally 80k miles on it and still wipes off and looks new. Now, this is Texas though.

That said, if I ever powdercoat something for someone and it does that, send it back to me and I will refinish it, no hassles or questions asked.

Every part I coat gets blasted to bare, white metal and then cooked off in the oven at 500 degrees for an hour. This step will outgas the metal and remove any contaminates in the pores of the part. Then, I blast it a second time before I coat it.

It's not easy or fast, but it is the right way to do it. Most production shops simply clean the part with a solvent and coat it. I understand, they do them by the 1000s and have to make a living in the business. I don't have that worry. I have a bread and butter job that keeps a roof over my head.

I sell into the powder coat industry - this is clearly bad prep work - sometimes letting things sit - outside and or on concrete is worse than driving them
