Calling All PowderCoat Experts !!!

I am alomst ready for the frame to go to the powdercoaters and need to know how smooth it needs to be, let me explain. I welded up most of the non used holes in the sides and top of the frame rails plus boxed the whole rear of the frame, how smooth does the frame need to be, will the powdercoat fill in any grind marks?? What if I use a ""tiger whhel" is that smooth enough? How can I test what it will look like before I send it, is just spraying spray paint over it give me a good representation of the final look?

Very confused on how much additional work I need to do to make this thing look good.

I think powder coat will magnify any imperfection - to some degree it depends on the color and the sheen chosen.
I would say clean it all up and you will be happier with the results in the end.

Color was going to be gloss black, but the more I think about all the imperfections I might go with hammertone black or silver vein? ANy sugestions guys

get it pretty clean. I just got mine back from powdercoat this week and you can see some of the deeper marks. It won't take that much time to clean up the marks that will show through and you would always know they are there whether anyone else woudl notice them or not. BTW not an expert by any means just a recent powder customer.

The vein texture will hide imperfections very well. I build a lot of metal sculpture and use vein powder on it. The welds and grinder marks tend to blend in very well once coated.

Gloss black, you better get it pretty slick. They do make high build filler powder though, that you can put beneath the top coat to hide imperfections.

Also does anyone have any pictures of black, gray or silver hammertone. I've heard this also hides a lot of imperfections but I would like to see the real color

That color is perfect , what brand of powder do you use? The other problem I have right now is the guy I am having powdercoat says his silvervein is not an exterior powder??? He is pushing me toward silver or gray hammer, which I do not know if I am to fond of.

I really like that silver vein, that would look great............ the other silver veins I saw samples of had alot more silver in them which I didn ot like

That powder is actualy Eastwood powder. Your guy is right, vein is not for exposure to the elements. Simple solution is to always coat vein with clear. The sample can has one coat of clear on it.

They make a wrinkle powder coat as well. We use it at the alot. We've used it on several frames and so far the owners have been happy. Ask your guy about that as well.

The shop that is doing the powdercoating uses powder from Cardinal Paint, they have a black,gray and silver hammertone. I wish they used Eastwwod powder then I would go with the silvervein and have tehm clearcoat it. They are sending me sample tomorrow so it might help in my decision.

Still would like to see an entire frame in gray or silver. I really do not want to use black wrinkle or hammertone because it might look like a frame with a bunch of grease on it??

to untrained eyes it may look like grease, but the final product looks so nice. Ill try to get some pictures. I think a gray or silver would be to eye popping. Honestly it would get annoying, being able to see the dirt and grime and always cleaning it. But to each there own. Whatever decision you make its the right one. Your truck frame will look good any color (well except pink )
