Need info on olds 455 into chevy truck

I want to swap my sb chevy 350 to a 455 olds. My truck is 1978 C-10 swb, I know you can use the diesel motor mount pads from napa from the 350 olds diesel. It drops in with BOP trans but what about crossmembers for trans. In my 1967 chevy C-10 I built a Buick 455/462ci with all the goodies! It was fast and the motor only weighs 60 pounds more than a sb chevy same as the olds. the buick motor was more cutting and welding. please any info or pics would be great! thanks

Re: Need info on olds 455 into chevy truck

The x member should not be a issue. If i remember correctly. The trans comes in a couple variations but it is the tailshaft that is different. Me and a buddy built up a 455 and put it in a 84 Olds Cutlass. The engine mounts were from trans am with a 307 in it. We never have started the car up though. It's a real shame too the motor should have over 600hp and 700ft-lbs. maybe one day he will finish it we aren't really good buddies anymore.

The biggest thing to do is mock it up and check the mounts for the right postion you will notice that there are several ways to install the mount on the bracket. Good Luck on you ChevrOlds

If you use the diesel mounts it should drop in no problem, if you are using a Th400 you only need to swap the case. We did a few of the diesel to 455 conversions years ago, the biggest headache was getting headers to fit..

I had a set of Doug Thorley headers on my old '74 C10 years ago with an Olds 455 in it. In fact,I still have the front end of the frame under my back porch with the engine mounts still in place on it.

Re: Need info on olds 455 into chevy truck

When you go to put the block in the truck you will need to move the engine mounts on the block itself to the forward 2 mounting holes. On the drivers side of the block the front mounting bolt hole also has the powersteering bracket attached there with a thick spacer to help align the belts. with the engine mount there you will need to shave (i.e. grind away) the spacer until the right thickness is otherwise your P.S.pulley's going to be outta whack.

When I installed my 455/TH400 into my old 74 C10, I utilized a shortshaft 2wd TH400 and bolted it to the cross member and lowered the engine down to locate the mounting positions for the frame mounted point of the engine mounts. Pulled the engine/tranny combo back out and drilled the holes for the mounts into the crossmember supports for the mounts. I used a standard chevy 350 lower rad hose to the radiator and the oldsmobile upper hose. As for the headers, The ones I used were made by Doug Thorley. You may want to contact Mondello's (Oldsmobile performance parts GURU's) for their input on the headers and anything else you wanna put into that torque monster of an engine.
