Chevy 305
I need your opinion if i should build a 305 i got for free or find a 350? I work at kragen oreilys in calif we have an old 305 on display in the back room an the new store manager said i could have it it is all new block crank an cam . I just want to know if it would be better to rebuild this engine or find a 350 i dont race or need tones of power i just use my truck to go to work and cruse around with my son in. Let me know what you guys think.

well, if its just your daily driver, it seems that the FREE 305 would be perfectly fine.
you said it has new crank etc...why rebuild it?

I like my 305. It's my everyday driver and it does well. I have the 700-R4 behind it though.

I had a 305 in my truck when I bought it, I suppose it got the job done, but it definitely didn't have much to speak of in the way of power. Part of me really wants to say to try and find a 350 because I know I was always wanting more out of the 305 and enjoy the 350 I have now lots more, but by the same token if that 305 is free and you just need it to cruise, then why not take it.
For what it's worth, I have a Turbo 350 and 3.08 setup in my truck. With the 290 horse 350 it's got enough power for that combo to some punch. Having a 700-R4 or at least just shorter gears out back would have made the 305 I had more enjoyable.

Crack it open, see what they didn't install, if it has no rust, then put it together and stab it in the truck. |

Is the engine complete? From your post, I'm assuming it's not. You will have a lot easier time finding parts for the 350 than you would the 305.
My opinion: I'd go with a 350 unless you already know where to get all the extra stuff to go with the 305. In all the looking in junkyards that I have done I've only seen one 305. Maybe it's just this area but they're not that common. |

Being a little bit older than i used to be and on a budget if I could have a fresh 305 ready to go cheap I would prob go with that.

I had a 305 in my short step with 373's and a 350 tranny and it had enough power. What i liked best about it was the gas mileage.

What a dumb a**, it just dawned on me that you were referring to a Chevy 305 not a GMC 305. Yeah, by all means, I agree to go with the 305 if it's free.
I had a buddy trying to sell me a GMC 305 so my mind is on GMC's today. |
