Best Way To Cut Hole In Bed

For an under bed fuel cell. I need to measure out the hole for the filler neck and cut it. What would be my best bet for cutting the metal? Can I put a cut off wheel on my grinder? Any tips for accurate measuring would be nice too

Re: Best Way To Cut Hole In Bed

My advice on cuttimg would be to use a hole saw.Especially if you need a round hole.Even if you need some other shape a hole saw will give you a good place to start what you need.
As far as measuring I can only say measure, measure, measure and then measure again. Then stop and measure again.Measure from the top and the bottom and try to determine if the marks match. Then drill from the bottom(if you have a better veiw to make sure it's right)with a small bit.You can then use the hole for a guide to drill the main hole.
Don't forget to check for fuel, brake, or any other kind of lines that may be under the floor.

round hole=hole saw
square or rectangle jigsaw if you know how to use one for cutting metal or a cutoffwheel

mount the gas tank. get a piece of hose the same diameter you are going to use and install in on the gastank (trim it enough to flush with the bottom of the truck bed, and mark around the hose with a sharpie, use that as your template...

+1 Great suggestion. you can drill a pilot hole in the center of the circle you marked and the use the correct size hole saw from the top or use that as the center to mark for cutting a hole with another tool.

The filler in the floor might be ok for a show only truck but I can say from experience that it gets to be a royal pain in the tailfeathers if you actually use the truck as a truck.

Re: Best Way To Cut Hole In Bed

I ran mine through the back driver side inner bed side. I cut out of the bed side a 3 inch hole with a hole saw. Then I got a pice of 4 inch square tubing and cut it at a 45 degree angle. Then I welded a piece of plate on the flat end of the Square tubing and smoothed out the welds. Then I welded the angled side over the three inch hole. Then cut a hole in the plate on the flat end for my fuel filler. Then I plumbed it down the bed side and into my tank.

Re: Best Way To Cut Hole In Bed

If you do it in the floor, you can stand on a piece of plywood to keep the hole saw from moving once you have it lined up. I had to do this with a 4" hole saw when I put my B&W turnover ball in my Duramax truck.
