car stereo question

I'm thinking about putting some tunes in my project truck. I have a 70 c-10 and wanted to know what wiring harness kit you guys have in your trucks that connects to the back of the cd player. My truck does not currently have any radio in it.

Re: car stereo question

You are on your own - I always make my own - not like putting a stereo in a new car where you can just plug and play

Re: car stereo question

Pretty much all I have going to my radio is a constant power wire a remote power wire to turn the radio on and off with the key and A ground. Then I run rcas out to amps that run all of my speakers

Re: car stereo question

jbristo67 close i think. you will have a red witch is constant or memeory. you will have a yellow on/acc wire. the usually pink is the remote wire to turn on amps or power an antenna. then black for ground...now for speakers. id=f you are goin to use the head as a pre amp then you will be hooking he speakers to the amps.. if not the you will have white.whaitblack. grey.greyblack. green.greenblack. and purple.purpleblack. if im not mistaken then white and gray are for front . green and purple for rear. or vise versa

i think this is just off the top of my head

Re: car stereo question

colors may be wrong, but hes got it right, i cant rememeber the colors off the top of my head either. when making my harness, i found it easiest to lable all my wires (as i used wire i had kicking around, so they were all different colors)

its a simple thing to put in a truck, the hardest part for me was bringing myself to cut the dash.

...i regret it.

Re: car stereo question

Most of the time Yellow is memory, red is switch on/off, blue is for a remote or antenna and black is ground. At least the ones I have done are.
Most the time the speakers will have to be butted into the harness after you plug up the connector. This should help too!

Re: car stereo question

Your unit will have a wiring diagram, and have a built in connector so the radio can be removed from the harness.

Re: car stereo question

on my sterio it was yellow to power an antena, for power it was red and orange, cant remember which is which, one constant the other aces/ign. right now both go to constant so i have turn it on/off manually, one of these days il wire it in properly. cant remember what colors for the speakers, no subs at the moment. youll most likly have a wiring harness that comes with the deck and instructions will tell you which is for what. im not sure but they might vary from manufacterer to manufacterer. mines a custom autosound

Re: car stereo question

Cut it! If you want a radio that you can use from the drivers seat that is. All this talk about not cutting the dash is just a bunch of talk. It's like saying don't put A/C in a non A/C truck. Don't take that 6 out and put a V-8 in it. It's your truck, do what you feel is the best for you.
Everyone has their opinion's and that's all they are!

Re: car stereo question

run the red wire(power) to something that cuts on and off with the switch.run the yellow wire(memory) to the fuse that says batt or if you have a cig lighter that will work with out the key being on you can run the yellow wire there as well.run the black wire to a ground or make a ground, and that should be it.then just hook up your speaker wires.

Re: car stereo question

Skip all the confusion, and read the instructions for your specific radio.

On my sony, the yellow was power and red was memory. Yes, backwards from what others said...

Put your switched power to the fuse block, it's labled radio. It will come on with the key, and in acc mode.

Re: car stereo question

The only other thing is to build a small console under the dash and put it there. Then you have 2 radio's though.

Re: car stereo question

If you do cut the dash be careful there is no turning back. I have cut a many
dashes on these trucks over the years use to be a car stereo installer. Put the cd player cage in position where you are going to cut and scribe. I use tin snips to cut mine but you can use an air saw. If you do not feel comfortable take it to a professional.

Re: car stereo question

i dont think i saw this in the thread but when you hook up your radio you can also tie the red and yellow wire together and run them to a constant power this way you do not have to turn the key to turn on your radio i like this way better just make sure you dont forget to turn it off or ur battery goes bye bye and the blue wire is for your remote. im going to cut mine up to place a dbl decker poineer touch screen in there im no professional i do the radio gig on the side but if you need any help just pm me and i can walk you trough it

Re: car stereo question

I just got a new JC Whitney catalog yesterday, and they have a radio in there on page 141 from Retro Sound for $249.99. I found there website, retrosundusa.com and they have a model listed for 67-72 Chevy trucks. It has a CD controller and USB input for a flash drive, so you wouldn't even have to have an Ipod. It appears that withe the "infinimount" adjustable shafts, you would not have to cut the dash to use this radio. Has anyone used one of these radios yet?

Re: car stereo question

If you are planning to run any type of amps for your stereo, then you would probably want to use RCA cables (Low level output) on the head unit. They allow for a cleaner sound and are easy to connect to the amps. The speaker wiring would run from the amps to the seperate speakers. The head unit should have it's own power, memory, antennea or trigger lead, and ground in the plug that comes with it. Most stereo units have a decent wiring diagram with them and lead you to a fair install.
