Steering box rebuild
I need to rebuild the steering box on my '54 3600. Does somebody (like CP or LMC) make a rebuild kit for these? Are there any gotchas I need to be worried about? Has anybody posted a thread (with pictures) detailing the project? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Steering box rebuild
Has anyone done this before? I have about a half turn of play in my wheel right now and assume it's because the box needs a rebuild. I noticed classic parts has a rebuild kit for a fraction of the price of the whole box they also sell, but don't know how big of a deal I'm getting into. Is this a relatively simple process?

Re: Steering box rebuild
Have you tried adjusting it?? Loosen the locking nut on the adjuster, turn the ajustment screw or bolt until the slop is gone and you can feel the internal ball bearing starting to bind up, back of a little and tighten the lock nut. When adjusting won't fix it its time for a rebuild.

I hadn't yet, I'll take a look at that. I'm assuming it should show how to do so in the shop manual, just didn't even consider that adjustment was possible. Thanks! |

Glad to help, any gm steering box instructions should work, basic principal is the same.
