Tilt Column Questions

Here goes. I have just installed an tilt column in my 67 c-20 with 700r4 auto and I have some questions.

Should I be able to feel any detent positions when I move the selector handle from park to low? Mine seems to move freely when it's not connected to the trans. I thought that on my previous truck I had to pull the handle towards me to get into park and I thought that once in drive that I couldn't go into lower gears without out pulling the handle to me. Does that spring on the end of the column have anything to do with this?

How do I pull off the outer cover around the turn signal mechanism without the special tool and without destroying it?

What's the best method of linkage for a 700r4 upgrade other that Lokar 1800 (because thats too springy)? Anyone used their cable system (A 1804 I think)? I started using aftermarket stuff because I thought that it would be better than stock and easier. So far I have nothing but frustration and a very spongy gear selector.

Thanks for the help

Re: Tilt Column Questions

Should lock in park . remove pin holding shift lever check that end of lever is not worn out. also does lever spring forward? As far as linkage I went to wrecking yard & got complete linkage setup from a 73-87 truck it worked out perfect.

Re: Tilt Column Questions

The detents are in the transmission, so it should move freely when you pull the lever back. I got a new shift kit from bowtie overdrives, but only ended up using the rod that goes down to the transmission. The original was not long enough. Could probaby just lengthen the orginal, but since I already had the new one I swapped out the rod. I had to move the part mounted to the frame, but that was on a 200R4, don't know how well the 700R4 lines up.
Be sure and get the TV system set up right or you will burn the new transmission up fast.

Re: Tilt Column Questions

OK,

I finally figured out my problem. My gear shifter handle is fried and it looks like it's about 1/4" shorter. I guess I need a new one. I'd like to find a lever for a van because I'm using a camaro steering wheel. Anybody have one or know where I can get one??

Thanks

Re: Tilt Column Questions

If you can't find the one you want, find someone who can weld skillfully, and use a picture of a good lever or a template and rebuild yours.
