Lightbulb which carb to use on 6cyl

for a 250 stocker. whats the best carb? stocker? In 1968 they changed carbs. should I use this later one? and then there is the weber2bbl carb people have used as well. I got a truck that will need a carb so Im checking out the options. I will likely change to HEI as well but other than this it will be stock. Let me know good and bad . Thanks

Re: which carb to use on 6cyl

I ran a 4 barrel, vacuum secondary, electric choke Holley 390 cfm carburator on an Offy 4 bbl intake on my 194ci L6. I routinely got 18 mpg with a lot more power available if I got into the secondaries - it would be even more responsive on a 250ci L6. I'm not sure if this is something that even factors into your selection, but I found the 4 bbl carb was a lot more efficient than the single and 2 bbl carbs that I had tried before. If you're interested my combo is for sale.

Re: which carb to use on 6cyl

It depends on what you want. I have tried a Holley 390, rebuilt Rochester 1bbl and now have a Holley / Weber 2bbl. If you go with a two or four that are progressive, i.e. the secondary(ies) don't open till you get into it, the performance is good and so is drivability. The Holley 4bbl and H/W 2bbl offer electric choke, which is good.

You could find unlimited discussions of options on www.stovebolt.com or www.inliners.org

Re: which carb to use on 6cyl

I had some requests to see the Holly/Weber, so her are some pics. I modified(cut to fit) the bottom of an old factory style air cleaner to fit the odd shape of the H/W and added some foam to seal it. There are some old style air cleaners that bolt right up, but i was trying to keep the factory look.

Great photos of your engine Curt! I dig the color--my 292 has remnants of it!

Re: which carb to use on 6cyl

I ended up using the original linkage. I think I had to turn the carb to make that happen. They can be had for pretty cheap from Tom Langdon at http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/aca...asp?catcode=33

Tom was an engineer at GM and played a part in developing the 250. Whether you're trying to hot rod a 250 or just make it driveable he can help. I would just call him. I think I needed a 1-2bbl adapter and the carb.Tom has a linkage, but I didn't particularly like the appearance of it.

Bob:

Thanks for sharing information about Tom from GM. It sounds like he is a great source of information. I will ear-mark the site to my favorites list.

Happy Holidays!

No problem Tony. You might recognize the air cleaner I used. ..it was from you. I didn't want to cut my original up.

So, is there a little performance gain using this carb? Also, are you running an electric choke? If so, how do you hook that up?

Re: which carb to use on 6cyl

I will have to look later to be sure, but i thinkit is just one hot wire(ignition on) to the choke.
