truck starting problems when its warmed up..
okay....i go out to start the truck when its cold out, 40* starts with ease...
i drive around get the engine up to normal operating temperature, cut it off, go ina store for..lets say 10 minutes...go back out, and the truck turns the starter/motor over..makes that noise, and after a few long seconds finally starts, but its embarrasing getting funny looks from folks thinkin that old pos trucks not gonna crank were gonna have to jump it off..... whats my problem dad thinks its the electric choke flooding it out... need help lol thanks

Re: truck starting problems when its warmed up..
As an experment, try taking the air cleaner off when the engine is warm and look down the carb to see what the choke is doing. You can use a large screw driver to prop it open if it is closed to see if it will start.
If the starter seems like it doesn't want to turn it over---when warm--the starter or solonoid is shot. |

Re: truck starting problems when its warmed up..
Is the starter getting really weak as it cranks?
Describe the noise.. With my manual choke, if I don't figure out the right combination of choke vs. pumping it tends to take a while to start during cold days after warming up, but of course cranks strong the entire time. So that's a matter of flooding by accident on my part. But if the choke keeps shutting while trying to restart after being warmed up, it is possible that it's having the same effect. |

Re: truck starting problems when its warmed up..
yeah, wen its warm, it almost sometimes sounds like i have no battery anymore its like ...(NOISE!!!!,Noise,Noise...,noise..nnnoic...)
like its tryin, and then batterys shot lol so i think starter or soleniod is bad (or both lol) but even wen it dont do that it still takes forever to finally run it just turns over, then over, then over then over...and finally starts lol..worrys me sometimes lol

Re: truck starting problems when its warmed up..
Yup, starter/solenoid has given out. Replace it now before it dies in a bad spot. Like mine did, out in the middle of the driveway on a wet day, blocking off the whole damn drive way
Too wet to push that day too. |

Re: truck starting problems when its warmed up..
what you have described has happened to me 3 times. with my 350 with headers, and my Burb with the caddy 500. it was always the starter, the heat does a number on them and wears them out sooner. starts great when they are cold but not when they are hot.

Make/buy heat shields, best bet to save them.
