Locking Gas Cap Question

I just bought a 72 from the X-wife of the PO, it has a locking gas cap and you guess'd it, no key. The up side is it has 3/4 tank of gas, the down side, I eventually will need to put more gas in. I considered using the torch but thought someone might have a better way?

Re: Locking Gas Cap Question

I have one on my 71 thats only a little more difficult to remove than the stocker, it just looks locked. Way too much side to side slop.

Re: Locking Gas Cap Question

Whatever you do, DON'T use the torch unless you want to see what getting blown up feels like. Gas and open flames don't make very good friends. What I would do is drive down to the nearest locksmith and he should be able to pick it for you. Then just slap on a normal non-locking cap. Problem solved.

Pick it! It's a simple lock.

I'm sure he was kidding about the torch.

Try a pipe wrench or a big pair of water pump pliers.

Re: Locking Gas Cap Question

Seriously...a paperclip and a small flathead screwdriver will do the trick. Use the screwdriver to put some turning leverage on the lock, unfold the paperclip in half, insert the smallest end into the lock moving it in and out to engage the tumblers, all the while keeping the screwdriver pushing in the direction that the key would usually turn, as each tumbler gets "stuck" into position due to the pressure, the cap will unlock, you can remove it and throw it away. Should take less than a few minutes and keep you from destroying anything.

Re: Locking Gas Cap Question

I worked at a gas station when I got out of high school. I had LOTS of people come in there who lost their gas cap key. I figured out the knife I carried (butterfly knife, blade was about one inch wide) would open them up easy. I would just pop the end in the keyhole, give the back of the knife a slap, and it would bust the mechanism inside and come right off.

Really it shouldn't be hard to remove from there once the mechanism is busted, IMO anyway.

Re: Locking Gas Cap Question

pick it as mentioned with a paperclip, or use a screwdriver in the keyslot to bust it open
