4 DRUM ??? help
Hey guys,
My truck has 4 way drums. My ? is are all 4 suppost to have the big spring that wraps all the way around the outside of the drum? Mine only has the spring on the fronts.... What does this spring do? Cheers, BC

lol... this was the very first question I ever asked on this board, and it has popped up a few times over the years.
With original drums, and vintage replacements, there is a space for the spring on all 4 corners, and it was in fact equipped with them originally. There was 2 answers given to me when i asked, and they both make sense to me. 1. added surface area for cooling. 2. to dampen the ringing noise. (like rubbing your finger around a wine glass) When I installed my springs after asking the Q... I did notice the ringing stopped. As far as to help cooling... I doubt it could do much. |

replacement drums didnt come with the springs on them
the springs were there to eliminate harmonic noises sometimes found in drum brakes and have no effect on the actual braking performance of the brakes
