Question Brake Conversion Hard Line Question.

Hey guys, I spent this weekend ditching the stock from drum brakes in favor of some discs (still not done though). I bought a spindle/rotor kit from McGaughty's.

Anyway, my truck was a manual drum setup, however I have a decent used booster and master cylinder from a '71-'72 C10 including the disc brake proportioning valve that I want to use. After looking at my current hard lines exiting my drum/drum proportioning valve its clear that the rear hard line isn't going to work with the disc proportioning valve because the existing hard line would need to make a 90* bend and I fear the old line would bust in the attempt.

So, what are you guys using that have done this swap?

I have the exact setup your going with, however I am not running a booster. You are more than likely going to have to custom bend your own lines.

Your best bet is to spend $50 at NAPA on a KD double 45 degree flaring tool. Get several scrap pieces of brake line and practice. practice, practice.

I know it sounds intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, you won't be sorry.

I just completed my swap last week and my hardline bent fine but i needed an adapter to go from the '70 rear hardline to the '72 proportioning valve (went to 4 different auto parts stores and finally found it at NAPA) if you need the specs on it let me know.

BTW: I didn't know they changed the brake line routing from '70 to '71. the '70 lines were routed under the engine, the '71 lines were routed in front of the engine

The lines were still under the engine, however on 67-70, they stayed behind the x member out to the wheel, on 71-72 they went under the motor mounts and up the front of the cross member. You may be thinking of 73 and up trucks that routed the brake lines behind the very front x member.

If your kit uses 71-80 calipers, the easiest way to go is to order the brake line set for a 71-72 truck from inline tube. It should have everything you need. You will have to fab up a bracket for the end of the hardline where the rubber hose connects at each front wheel. I like to cut the existing one off the back of the x member and tack it on the front.

Yeah, if you have that Napa part number and/or specs it would be great. I have a tubing bender, I just haven't attempted it yet.

thanks. the prop valve is a CPP part# PV-1

ford assassin,
I searched the NAPA website but couldn't find the exact pn#. you may call up your local NAPA and ask them if they have the KD Tools brand, 45 degree double flare kit. I can get the actual KD part# tonight if you need it.

oh, your talking about the line to line adapters, right? if so, I got those at NAPA as well. just took the two mating tubes or threads in and I was gold.

Change of plans, I called ECE and asked Mark what they do for conversions and as it turns out they have an adapter they call the "Candy Cane" that will connect to my rear line and extend and bend the line to fit into my '71-'72 proportioning valve. $15 to my door and alot less hassle.
