Question
Can someone tell me why do some fleetside beds have a round gas filler door and some have a square filler door?

That just depends on the year I think. Not 100% sure though.

Yep, they changed in 79 to having gas filler doors. Another interesting note. At some point (I think 81) the single tank boxes moved the gas filler from the passenger side (73-80) to the driver's side (81-87). By piecing together two single tank boxes you could have a box with no filler door with no welding!!! (You might have to move some of the tailgate hinge and latch stuff though)

1979 was the first year for the filler door, 1980 was the last year for the tank to be standard on the passenger side, 1981 it moved to the drivers.
This ONLY applies to pickups, and only single tanks: 73-78 had exposed filler cap on passengers side 79-80 had a filler door on the passenger side 81-98 had filler door on drivers side. Burb/Blazer had filler doors starting in 1976, from memory.
