Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
Ok, so I have my entire front end tore down, and will be finally installing my dropped crossmember this weekend. I still have to but my rack and pinion, and I am keeping my powersteering. I do not want to pay through tthe nose for a chrome rack from flaming river or unisteer, and a few people have mentioned that any power rack for a 79-93 Mustang will work. My question is this: Parts stores show several different configeratons, from sport steering to oem, meanign the number of turns from lock to lock. What is confusing is they show some racks with a "ford gear" and th one below it will have a "TRW gear". What is the difference, and what rack is best to use? Having a friend that works at a parts store makes this purchase really inexpensive, like $60 for a power rack. I just need to know exactly which one I need.

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
Why not ask the manufacturer of the crossmember what rack they recommend for their product.
As far as I know the only two builders of this sort of component are both vendor members here. |

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
I bought the Dropped crossmember from Suicide Doors. I have talked to Jason, and they used a Flaming River rack i believe. I have also looked over the forums throughly, and seen where others have used other racks. No matter the vendor, both parts take a rack that fits a 79-93 Mustang, also knownas a mustang 2 rack. I know that Porterbuilt has used more expensive racks as well as one from Summit, so again there are many applications that fit both the Suicide Doors crossmember and the dropmember. Nowhere though have I found an explaniation about what the difference in the ford gear or the TRW gear, although I do know that TRW is a company that make car parts, one of them being a rack and pinion. I have done my homework. I have just not found the answer to my question in everywhere I have looked. Thanks for the suggestion though

Colin- Jason is a member here as well as the other site you posted the question on. I am surprise he hasn't responded.
Give him a call and ask what options you have besides Flaming River.

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
Colin-
For a more economical version, try to cross these two part numbers: 22-203F 22-201F

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
I have been doing some searching for a rack also and came up with this place, http://www.rackandpinionwhse.com/ser...sh-1993/Detail
Has anyone used them and any idea why these seem so cheap. Even with the core you are only talking $85.

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
One other question, can I use my stock Chevy LT-1 power steering pump with these racks? I read something about newer mustang II racks work with chevy pwr steering pumps.

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
Jegs carries a power steering line kit that connects from a chevy power steering pump to a mustang rack. I think its Part Number # 153-925102 .

Re: Rack and Pinion for Dropped Crossmenber
I used nate's x-reference # 22-201f at autozone and only spent 100.00 bucks
not as clean as flaming rivers but it does the job!!!
