Cutting rear end
If i get my rear end shortened, can i take the axles to a machine shop and get them shortened, or do i have to buy new ones?

Re: Cutting rear end
It depends on how much you are going to narrow. Some axles have enough spline area to be narrowed, and some don't.
It some several shops I have talked with found it cheaper to have them made. Scoti recently brought up another valid point when considering which way to go. If you have the stock shafts narrowed they are still 20+ years old. It's probably worth spending a few extra bucks to have new ones built.

Re: Cutting rear end
New axles from Moser are pretty reasonable. Cost you less than $500 with shipping, depending on what axle you get. I think their economy axles are around $150 each last I checked?

Re: Cutting rear end
ive encountered this too, and like scoti/n2trux said they are 20 yrs + old......besides that the machine shop wanted 75$$ per axle....when you combine the axles 150$ (75x2) ,new brgs/races 30$ (15x2), and the seals 10$ (5x2)
for a total of 190$$ plus time, and thats re-useing your old wheel studs.... or you can get a set of new (any length) axles from summit (moser) with studs, brngs/races, and seals for about 320$$ (thats for a chevy truck 12bolt) id say get new, thats the best deal IMO.... |

Re: Cutting rear end
when i narrowed my rearend in my dually i used my short axle as my new longer axle. i only had to have on axle resplined. it was cheaper this way.
