Ive read a few articles about this subject, having the same train of thought as you years back when I started tearing into my pick-up. The best stuff I got out of the articles was as follows:

Find a picture of a truck that is similar to what you like. Hang it on the wall or fridge or somewhere. Always refer to that picture as your reference.

Come up with a plan and stick to it. Nothing costs you money like changing your mind.
