Detroit Autorama - unimpressed?
Went to the Detrot Autorama and I guess I have to say that I wasn't impressed. Oh, the big boys' show cars were neat. But when your chromed zoomie headers run down thru zero clearance notches in your fenders and then back up thru zero clearance notches in the outer edges ot the same fenders, it's not really a driveable car, is it?
There was exactly 1 squarebody, a slammed blacked out dually. There were 2 67-72's. There was a barn find Yenko Nova, and a nice Cameo, and a really cool 40's GMC with a big diesel stuffed in it. But there were more 70-89's psychadelic vans than trucks. Guess I was unimpressed that food and vendor space was about the same floor space as cars. Now I really appreciate the local show that draws 400+ cars that almost all are driven there. Sure is nice to pay the $5 versus the $15 too. BTW weird shades of orange, yellow, green, and cream abounded. And many examples of how not to paint metallics. I now have much more respect for those that can get the flake to lay even.

Re: Detroit Autorama - unimpressed?
OK you picture whiners.
BTW other than 1 57 chevy and 1 69 GTO this is all I bothered with. And it was only $15 due to a discount ticket prebuy. And we parked for $10 too, and I bought the family a snack and dinner to the tune of $100. But that GMC is enough to get a man off the squares... nah, not quite. BTW this is NOT the one with the diesel in it - it was too dark for my cheap camera to get a good picture of that beast.

Re: Detroit Autorama - unimpressed?
I hear the roof in Cobo leaked in the rain (it wasn't raining on Friday when I was there)and many of the "top" cars covered up LOL. Sisn't want the water, salt from rooftop parking, and general rust and bird poop on their billion dollar interiors. Guess that the City of detroit's rejection of a combined city/state/county board to overss and renovate Cobo wasn't so bright. For you non-michi-ganders, Cobo hall needs 2oo+ million in expansion and renovation. A lot of that is in rewiring as the last crew to update it did such a poor job that they have to bring in generators for the auto show...

Re: Detroit Autorama - unimpressed?
This is in reply to the "barn find" yenko nova.................that car was airbrushed to look old, faded and rusty. What you thought was rust was paint. You may not have noticed the big banner that said "todds custom painting" laying on the ground next to it.

Re: Detroit Autorama - unimpressed?
Dunno but it's got the 88-up grille in it which is all the big difference in the later model years.
Yeah, I didn't notice the painter note on the Yenko, I wasn't real interested and the girls (daughters and wife) were whining. Didn't get to the basement because they whined me out, plus I'm not really into tuners or rat rods (think theyre a good idea that's been copied too many times). But I did like the 68 and 69 SS427 Impalas. That's 2 of my 4 first choices in cars (67 version, or 72 Monte SS454).

Re: Detroit Autorama - unimpressed?
Nice pictures - that black '67 was BEAUTIFUL!!
The caliber of cars goes up a little every year, the basement is becoming a must-see as well! I took a few pictures, I was there all weekend promoting my web site with the guys from DETROIT MUSCLE. Link to pics: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=333808 |
