hub selection (opinions)

just recently i broke the insides of my hub. big deal no prob, run down to the store grab me up a pair and back on the road. ya right, my hubs are some what common but there is huge difference in price between the one i have and the other brand. what i run is the WARN hub $200-$250 a pair (has been a great hub no complaints) the other is MILE MARKER $95-$120 a pair. what is the better. chevy dana 44, 19 spline. i do mostly mud, no rocks or major hills (i live in far north oklahoma ) so do i go expensive and go with what what has been working or go cheaper and hope to get the same........
i believe the WARN code is 9072(not too for sure)

examples of what i have found....

I have never ran the external style but I use WARN and never had issues.

Re: hub selection (opinions)

I`ve never had MMs,but never heard anything bad.I`m a Warn Premium man,too.

Here`s a story...(ya,I know)
My first 4wd had Warn Loc-o-matics and I kept blowing them out. Finally I realized when Warn said to lock manually for heavy loads and compression braking it was because they are weak in "auto" mode. So,it was any extra torque that was lethal, like mud and big tires.
They cost $150 a pair back in the mid-70s and that was alot of money at the time. After buying 3 individuals I mail ordered some no-name crap from some mail order 4wd catalog for $40 and never had a problem again.I was running 14.50/37s on a 3/4t pickup.

Re: hub selection (opinions)

thanks for the info guys........HERE IS WHAT BLEW MY MIND TODAY.....i had sent an email to the WARN customer service and asked about just a replacement for what broke, he said they do not and the replacement hub i need is the 9072. HE THEN SAID "It is evident from your photos that the hubs have been “packed” with grease – we do not recommend packing the hubs because the grease hardens and causes issues with engagement.". SO am i not to run grease?????? does this sound right, i pack them with grease to prevent water/mud to stay out....have i been lead wrong all these years.

Re: hub selection (opinions)

I have never packed a hub with WB greese. I do use a small amount of greese on the seal area & on the ring to keep friction down and the parts sliding like they should, but it's just a small amount I wipe in there.
Packing with greese can prevent the slide action from working.
Happy Friday!

Re: hub selection (opinions)

it's the "pack with grease" part. no do not do that, but what Burt4x4 said, run a little.

Re: hub selection (opinions)

o.k. i smell what you guys are cooking.. BUT... my truck is not so much a daily driver, i mostly play around. so my question is when i'm in the muck muck, the ponds and such, YOUR telling me it is o.k. to run a little grease. I figured i would want to run WB grease NOT THROUGHLY PACKED but a considerable amount to keep the water/grit from getting further than need be into the hub area/keeping it extra greased at the same time. The mud tears up the seals and when "my friends and i" service our rides there is crap that will come out of the hubs, we go threw seals quite often, what we have learned over time is the more marine WB we use the lesser the crap you find dumping out in the hub area when you pull it off...i know there is no way of making it perfectly watery tight, and not to pack it solid (casue it does having moving parts). my mud pit at times can put mud well above my 38" and i have had it and will continue at times put it deep into the pond.....a little example on me in a pond and my buddy going threw the shallow part of my new pit (he almost made it) as always thanks for you patience

Re: hub selection (opinions)

Ya, think of the greese as your 'secondary' seal. The hub and the WBearing seals should keep the mud and water out but as you know the dirty water tends to find it's way in..esp if your sitting in the stuff not moving
Oh and I use Blue marine greese on everything.

Re: hub selection (opinions)

well i just got the return call back from the guy at Warn....great guy (Arron Hall customer service) he gave me the run down on his theory....saying "if you think about it the mud and other settlements tend to harden the grease and not allow everything to fully engage, or operate right". he also told me the mechanicles of the new hub (9072) consists of one big spring rather than my old mechanicles, which consisted of 4 small springs and to service more often and to make a better seal on the cap of the hub and the base of the hub. and to look over the spindle seals more often also. so i guess i am off to adventure down a new trial and error.......

so anyone down for donating me the $250 i will put your name on my back glass

Re: hub selection (opinions)

If you run this thing in that kind of mud/muck most of the time, service it regularly, and do minimal street driving......why not just run drive flanges? Forget the locking mechanism and the associated sealing problems, the drive flanges have "dust covers" that would seal out anything....and failure is nearly impossible.
