I have a tick-tick noise from the engine, it is a stock 305. When it idels it is not there, then when you give it gas it's there. After it warms up it is still there but not as loud. If it is a lifter wouldn't be there all the time?

im wondering if its not internal to the motor but a loose flexplate or flywheel or is it definately something you can hear from within the motor

well depending on the year if your running 87 gas then you could have a spark knock. try the 89 and see if it's still there. thats all it sounds to me but could be wrong. reason i'm saying this is chevy built there motors in the early to late 80ty's for 89 not 87. you can also get octain boost too

I don't think it's spark knock unless you here a sharp "pinging" sound rapidly while under a load.

Sounds to me either you've got a lifter issue or possibly an exhaust leak.

All I've ever run in my '85 was 87 octane and it's always been fine unless I way over advanced the timing.

try putting 89 in. see what happens

It shouldn't be pre ignition if the engine does it when cold.
Lifters do tend to prime up better after the oil gets hot.
I would check the rockers on both banks, if one is loose, two or three are not
far behind it.

Thank you will try some octain boost, I just filled up the tank.

I was leaning towards exhaust leak, will try some higher octan to see what happens. Then my next day off will look at the exhaust.

That would not be good, but it would give me a reason to rebuild it.

a few years ago my truck was making the ticking when I just put the motor in a found out the passenger side header had pen size hole by the header flange and rocker was a little loose

i'd check for an exhaust leak, mine does that every time i blow a header gasket. i'd also run your valves, could be something as simple as a loose rocker........good luck.............

when i run headers i use the aluminum gaskets they worked great for me

a lifter may need ajusted. or you cound have a worn lifter depending on your engine mileage.
