Wheel Cylinder Question?
Hi all I just shortened my driveshaft and have it in now comes the brakes I think the front wheel cylinders are kinda pricey so I am going to try rebuilding them my only concern is breaking the bleaders loose without breaking them off my idea is to submerse them in a cup of PB Blaster or kroil but the rebuild kit says any solvent has to be dot 3 compatible my thinking is if I use brake clean after and blow it off with air it should be ok. What is your opinions will this work or will I need to use heat also? There is no substitute for experience and in this situation I dont have that! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I've never tried to submerge a part in blaster, but blaster is great stuff. Can you leave a rubber line hooked up that is above the level of the blaster? That would keep the blaster out of the inside of the wheel cylinder.
Brake cleaner is designed to remove oils from the surfaces of pads/shoes/rotors/drums, I don't think its designed for use inside the wheel cylinder. When you go to loosen the bleeder, make sure you use a 6 point deep socket. This will minimize tearing the threads off. If you break the bleaders, you should be able to buy them individually at your favorite parts store. |

The warnings about solvents has to do with the rubber components of the wheel cylinder. If you have the cylinder removed from the backing plate and completely stripped of its "guts".....you can do nearly anything to it. It is nothing more than a steel casting with a big hole bored through the middle and a couple of small holes from the side. One for the fluid line and the bleeder.
I see no problem at all with soaking one after it is stripped. Then if you do break it off, it is already removed from the truck where you can drill it out easier anyway.
