No fuel from fuel pump. Help

The only thing worse than being stranded with fuel problems is being stranded while trying to sell a truck. The buyer was on a test drive. I was so embarrassed.
This happened last time I had the truck out, so I replaced the fuel pump, and put a clear fuel filter between the filter and and the carb. The truck hasn't been driven regularly in 3 or 4 years, so I think that there may be gunk in the fuel tank clogging the fuel pump.

What should I do?

Re: No fuel from fuel pump. Help

Did you check the usuall suspects?

Fuel tank sock?
Some carbs have a filter built in right at the inlet.

Goin deeper... is the cam old? Chevy V8's (assuming you have a V8) fuel pumps are actuated by a lobe on the front of the cam shaft.

Does it start back up after it sits for a while? I think I would pull the sending unit out and make sure the sock filter is still on the end of the pickup tube and that it isn't clogged. It sounds like something may be sucking into the end of the pickup tube and blocking the fuel flow...

I haven't checked the sock, but I have checked and replaced the fuel filter in the carb.
It will fire a couple of cylinders after it sits, but it won't run.

If the sock is clogged, and I need to flush the tank, what do I use, and how do I do it?

Re: No fuel from fuel pump. Help

Are you getting fuel to the pump?
How about the rubber parts of the fuel line between the tank & the pump. Are they soft & collapsing, not allowing fuel flow?

If you are still running the clear plastic, or glass fuel filter, I'd suggest ditching it.
We've never met, but I'm willing to bet big $'s that you'll be really pi$$ed if the fuel filter either melted or broke and you had to watch your truck burn to the ground.

I siphoned the gas out of one of mine, took it out, got the pressure washer out and ran a bunch of soapy water through it. Then I ran clear water through it, emptied out as much of the water as I could, and put a couple bottles of heat in it and sloshed it around. I dumped the heat out, put it back in the truck with a new sock filter and haven't had any more problems....

Re: No fuel from fuel pump. Help

I'll pull the tank tomorrow and get a new sock and some heat. When I replaced the fuel pump, I had gas coming down the line. I haven't checked rubber lines, but I have some fuel line, and It won't be hard to replace.
El Jay - You are right, I don't want to watch it all go down in flames. But, with a metal filter, I couldn't tell if I was getting fuel to the carb while working on the truck by myself.

Re: No fuel from fuel pump. Help

Have you checked the fuel line leaving the fuel pump to the carburetor? Recently, my truck died while driving it. I could not figure out why I wasn't getting fuel to the carb. When I looked down, what looked like a radiator hose leak, turned out to be the fuel line leaking. The fuel line was falling apart, from what seemed to be a chemical reaction. It may have been from gasoline with ethanol. I replaced the fuel line and the problem was solved.

The other item to check would be the fuel sending unit. I replaced mine as it was plugged up, after years of sitting.

Good luck.

If you have a Chevy dealer near you the part # for the filter is 5651705.
