72 3/4 ton 4x4 rear drums Need HELP

I originally posted this on the 4X4 board.

I need help trying to figure out the rear drums for a 72 3/4 4X4 for a guy I know. Here's what we know:

72 truck with 12" drums that have a 2" wide brake shoe face on the drum and the drums are about 5" deep in total. Upon trying to find new replacements he keeps coming up with a 12" drum for 2 1/2" wide or slightly larger shoe and they don't fit. It sounds like he may have an Eaton diff in it.

If anybody knows what we need to look for in the parts books to find the correct drums it would be greatly appreciated.

I think these 3/4T 4X4 drums are going to be hard to find. When I have a 4X4 question, I try to reach Jerry (tow hooks). He really knows these 4X4s and has some good parts.

Some of the newer books do not show the drums needed for the dana 60 and even some of the manuf. show them as discontinued or obsolete. If you need some good drums I may have some that I took off for a disc conversion and they were almost brand new if I remember right. EM if interested

Had the same problem with my 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4X4. Believe it or not, the guys at NAPA auto parts in my area came up with the right parts. Mine has a Dana 60 with 4.10s. Great plow truck. Good Luck

brakes

If the rear end is an Eaton, the center section will be circular.
The drums for that are actually 11.24x2, but are listed as 12x2.
New drums will run 70-100$ U.S. and the shoes should be under 20 bucks U.S. Any reputable parts shop should have both in stock. I can get actual numbers if needed.

*IF* your drums are 12x2 then the rear end is a 1971 3/4T 4x4 setup, probably Eaton. That was the only year they did 12x2 -- and those drums are very find.

1972 3/4T 4x4 s/b 11x2 3/4 (both Dana and Eaton I believe).

If you have the 12x2 I would check into just getting the backing plate/hub/drum setup for a 11x2 3/4 1972 2WD or 4WD and run with that. Or a 1970. I would think that would work. I ended up swaping in a 14 bolt and should have just tried what I mentioned.
