Re: 6 lug to 5 lug rear?
the best way is to buy new axles, but the cheapest way may be to locate a complete rear?

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug rear?
being that you have a 68 with the narrow rear axle, I would advise locating a 71/72 rear end with the same style springs yours has, and installing the complete assembly.

Re: 6 lug to 5 lug rear?
Because when you convert the front drums to disc, the track width gets wider. Drop spindles? Even wider. In 1970-1/2 the rear axles were widened to match the upcoming 71 disc brakes.

i pulled my 69 axles out of the rear and took them to a machine shop and had them re drilled for 5 lug and the hub shaved down. very easy and pretty inexpensive
