What mufflers are you guys running?
I bought my 76 with flowmaster 40 series and they sound good but are a bit loud. Not to mention the drone that flows have... (no crossover yet but would like to get one installed however the driveshaft is in the way except at the rear axle) I thought about 50-60 series but if I'm gonna pay for new mufflers, it'd be silly to get the same brand if the drone bugs me. I thought about magnaflow but basically the design I saw was a straight through perforated pipe inside a "regular" looking case, so it's a glorified cherry bomb with more packing.
Basically looking for info about what you guys run and if you'd buy them again? Also, anyone seen a good comparison in a magazine or on a website between several different brands? thanks Last edited by maxreps; 03-27-2009 at 03:31 PM. |

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I'm currently running flowmasters on my '74 too and you do get tired of all the noise after a while. I'm thinking of switching to a turbo muffler i hear they're not as loud. I have a buddy that has a borla on his 2004 silverado with no cats and it sounds good i like it but borla is expensive.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I have the Summit 2 1/2" Turbo mufflers on my '85. They're the $17 mufflers in the catalog. They sound pretty good but when I redo the truck this summer I'm going to put 50 series Flowmaster's on it.
If I want to cruise qiuetly, I'll just drive my honda.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
Not quite at that stage yet, but probably going to run Corsa. I had them on a C5 Corvette years ago and they sounded great at wot and very quiet at cruising speed (have noise canceling technology to get rid of that drone).
Don't think they make them specifically for our trucks, so will probably find a system on Ebay to chop the mufflers out and have them custom done at an exhaust shop.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I run Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flows. It's that Flowmaster sound, but turned down a notch and without the drone. In my setup, I have long tube headers, an H pipe, and the pipes exit under the rear bumper.
Not sure what your setup is, but if the exits are dumped right under the vehicle, this is a recipe for LOUD. The sound bounces around between the pavement and the underside of the vehicle and it end up being louder than it should. This also increases interior resonance by a good bit too. Magnaflows are basically a better turbo muffler. Construction and muffling are the same, but instead of the "S" path, it's straight through. These are quiet at cruise and idle, but at full throttle they are pretty loud.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I've got Hooker Aero Chambers on my big block. Nice mellow tone at idle, no noticable drone at cruise, get comfortably loud at WOT.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
Right now it's running stock manifolds(just bought a set of flowtech headers) and is 2.5" running all the way past the axle exiting on each side(pointing down but not near the ground-can't be seen from the rear) right behind the rear tires.
Haven't thought about Corsa.. I'll look into them. I have ran the Dynomax super turbo on my 71 240z, it was loud but prob is quieter than my 40's are now. Last edited by maxreps; 03-27-2009 at 04:12 PM. |

I have a corsa system on my 03 silverado and think its one of the best exhaust systems out there, IMO. And I have read that they make a universal style muffler, and have seen them on the jegs website...... http://www.jegs.com/p/Corsa/964933/10002/-1 I'm pretty sure they make them for a larger diameter exhaust as well.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
On my 85 I'm running two cherry bomb extremes (1 chambers) turned down before the axle. It sounds great and is very loud, both inside and outside, but I dont care, I'm a kid and it doesnt bother me. If you want it quieter than I would reccomend Maganflow or Hooker's Aerochambers. They both have a more "mellow" tone but still sound great.

My 84 has stockers on it, but will get a custom 3" with a diesel muffler later this year.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I am sure that the setup doesn't help things either since I cruise at 3100-3200 rpm @ 60mph... I really need to put in a 700R4! I've calculated that'd put me about 2200 @ 60mph.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
Dual 2.5 magnaflow cats and mufflers running all the way back to exit in the stock location. Its pretty loud in general but quiets down nicely at an idle. It might be a little much to listen to everyday.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I have flowmaster 40's on my truck and they are loud! THey are dumped under the truck and they suck. Makes the whole truck vibrate at certain RPM's.
I am going to try and find a muffler called Mello Tone. I have had some before on a old buick and it sounded great and made a noticeable difference over stock. I don't live near the shop that sold them and haven't found them online.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
I have a set of flow master knock-offs. They are made my Thrust. They sound very close to the flows on my 83 1-ton. I am very happy with them so far. They were exactly half the price of the flow masters. I have had them on for over a year now and no problem what so ever.

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
My black truck is running a 2.5" dual exhaust that exits behind the rear wheels . It had 40 series flows but I switched it to 50 series . I like the sound better now . The 40's were OK but not for this truck . I will probably run 40 series on my next truck because it wont be a stock engine cruiser .

Re: What mufflers are you guys running?
Dynomax super turbos on my 87 305. They are a bit quiet but sound nice at WOT. They would probably sound better behind a beefier build though.
