I want to install a tilt column (havent bought yet) and just want to know if these two parts (Grommet plate and support plate)are still used to hold the column or are modifications necessary.

Re: Tilt column install question
I installed a tilt from a '72 into my '67 with no modifications. The only thing you may need to look at is, my column from my '67 was a one piece and the tilt was a two-piece. So just make sure you have the whole column to install.
Other than that, bolted (and plugged) right up without any issues. Now of course, this is assuming you are using a column from a '71-'72 and installing into a '67-'72. I don't have much experience installing later models into these years, but I am sure someone here has. Don

Re: Tilt column install question
My ole man told me a tilt from an 80's van will work great on these trucks, and he has 30-40 builds under his belt, just make sure the length is close for you, we are tall dudes 6'3" and 6'4" so what works for us may not everyone else. You are going to have to fill in the ignition switch hole on the column, I have been looking all over for a non auto tilt without a ignition switch some of this old crap is getting hard to find!

Re: Tilt column install question
When I got my truck it didnt have a column. How are they secured in the dash? Is it by those two plates that I need? It looks like it would just spin, not having any tabs.

Re: Tilt column install question
There is actually a second "U" shaped bracket that bolts the column to the dash directly under the bottom pate you took a pic of. You tighten that down to firm up the column. Also the column bolts to the firewall to help keep it secure.
The hole in the middle of the bottom plate is actually the access hole to unbolt the column so you can drop it so you can take the instrument cluster out without having to take the whole unit apart. I hope you have luck finding a tilt. I found mine used for $150.00 and it was quite a steal. I have seen them go for upwards of 500-800 rebuilt and 300-500 used. Hope this helps. Don

Re: Tilt column install question
I saw one the other day for $175.00 at a local guy's house he said he would sale it. It would have to be rebuilt I would think but I didn't mess with it because I was looking for some hood hinges, it even had a steering wheel with it. It was inside his shop so it wasn't out in the weather.
