K10 e-brake cable to short

I am having trouble with my sons 71 K10 rear emergency brake cables, all the cables I can find seem to be to short.
First off, let me give you all the specs. 71 K10 4" lift, long wheel base 8' bed, leaf springs.
I don't remember where I purchased these cables, its a long term project
The casing is 28" long they seem to be about 10" short. Has anyone had this problem?
Anybody recently replace the rear cables on a 1/2 ton 4x4? If so did they fit and where did you get them? Part number maybe?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: K10 e-brake cable to short

They are too short and every auto parts type replacement is the same length. I spent 2 hours with a rep from carquest on this issue back in the winter and finally convinced him that 1- their parts will not fit no matter what anyone does 2- they have nothing in their inventory that is the same length. I returned the cables and bought the kit from inline tube that included the front, intermediate and rear cables- they do offer just the rear cables but they are roughly $50 each, but they install and work exactly as OEM ad look just like OEM, so imo it was worth it.

Re: K10 e-brake cable to short

For a 6" lifted lingbed I ordered 5" longer than stock from Inline Tube and they were plenty long. The stock ones would be too short by a few inches with that lift.Stock length works on 4" lift.I didn`t realize replacements were wrong. That`s good to know.

Re: K10 e-brake cable to short

I just ordered some custom cables from Control Cables Inc. Haven't received them yet but, so far, they are easy to deal with on the phone.

Re: K10 e-brake cable to short

Thanks guys, I will check those links out.
Why in the heck do all the auto parts stores have cables to short?
Do any vendors here carry something that will work? maybe that costs less than 50.00?

Re: K10 e-brake cable to short

Might be worth checking at a hardware store -- you might get lucky. Years ago I had cables made at my local store for just a few dollars. They had the right size cable, cut it to length, and pressed the ends on.

I set the parking brake at least three times every day, and no problems yet. Last time I checked, though, they couldn't find the parts or the press -- and the guy who helped me then has since retired.

I just had the same issue, the rear cables were about 4" shy of making the mounting hole. I did get lucky with that though as I just ordered the wrong part, I ordered for a 2wd truck which I guess is different. The ones that I have in there now are 36" cased with about 6" inside the drum and another 4-5" out the front. I picked them up through LMC Truck, easily findable on the WWW. The part # for the ones that work is 34-3861 for the rears. Make sure that when you look in the catalog it states 4wd.

My last problem is having an intermediate cable made up as the on I have is about 2' too long. But it looks like the place/s mentioned in this thread are just what I need. Thanks.

Re: K10 e-brake cable to short

hey dude i went through this issue with my 83....
i had to get a 110 in long cable and a random cable and tube from the ebreak itself..
make sure the cable is routed correctly ( i had this issue for a few days because i am stubborn)
the issue i ahd with carquest was their computers stated the that 80's fullsizes were front wheel emergency brakes....
might wanna doublecheck that part..
i love car quest to death dude... it was a total mood killer during that experience..

got any pictures of where and how you have everything mounted and routed?

Hey Ron thanks! I was looking at LMC also but that part number is described as a "4WD Blaz Jim" rear cable. I was thinking of trying it anyway, now I know it will fit thanks! You do have a half ton truck right? My 3/4 ton has different cables, the mount to the backing plate is different. It is half the price of the inline tube cable and I'm sure it will be good enough. Now if I can only get my son to fork over the bucks for them to place the order.

You got it. I have what I assume is a half ton 4wd stepside. 6 lug axles, 12 bolt rear, hung on leaf springs. I need to buy a actory assembly manual to be really sure of what I have. Some of the autopart houses I went to were asking $110 per cable for the rear ones. What have I gotten myself into, another money pit. :-)
