A little help, well actually alot of help would be appreciated
Ive just bought an 85 C10 2wd. The body is in decent condition. Recently painted and everything. The engine need to be rebuilt. It drives and passed emmissions but im looking for advice on where I should start with my rebuild. It has a 305 4 speed in it with a granny 1st gear. I cant afford to drop a crate motor in it so im going to have to make due with the 305 for now. Let me know what you think.

First thing I'd do is go buy a 350 to replace the 305 with, and build it up properly while running the 305!

No, they're basically the same engine.

What makes you think that you need a rebuild? If you are on a budget, maybe you should just go through it. Pull the intake, valve covers, and oil pan and inspect. If everything looks good, put it back together, maybe upgrade a few parts--look for deals. Clean everything, fix anything broken, find all your exhaust leaks. Tune, tune, tune. That could get you by for a long time with only spending a few dollars. Then if you want save and build a performance motor on the side.
You wouldn't have to change transmissions if you swapped though.

Keeping the 305 in while I build my 350 is a great idea. My exhaust is new but the engine leaks oil bad. Im not an expert mechanic. Is there any do it yourself help stuff on here telling me how to do that stuff

Everything is on here. That little search function in the top right is pure gold. If you cant find it there, then just ask. Just dive into it and figure it out, you always have help here if you need it.

I ran a 305 in my 85 chev for a couple of years, put a on an Edelbrock performer intake, dynomax elcheapo headers, dual exhaust, new plugs, wires, cap, and rebuilt the stock 4barrel carb. spent about $350 on parts, did the labor myself on a weekend, and had a decently strong running engine until i got my 355 built. The best part is, when you do build a new motor for it, you'll already have a nice intake and headers. You should start by doing a oil pressure and compression check though and make sure that your bottom end is good.

Do you know where it is leaking from? It may be possible to re-seal the engine without pulling it out...

Welcome to the board. Keep running the 305 until it breaks. Unless you need to drive your truck every day. My old 305 would out run stock 350. The little engines are great. Under powered by great.
The first suggestions is to drop it!! A 2.5/4", or 4/6 or 5/7 drop makes a huge difference in looks. Keep it stock. Stock trucks look great with only a few modications. |
