Brake booster

I need to R/R my power brake booster. I looked on the RPO listing in the glove box. it has an RPO of 1J50. That doesn't tell me much. NAPA wants to know what the JB# is. Can anyone tell me where to locate that number?
Thanks.........

Re: Brake booster

I don't know what that number is, but there are only a few booster sizes/shapes.

I recently did mine, told my local supplier (small old-time shop) and they brought out the book. I pointed and said yep, that's the one.

No numbers needed.

I just replaced mine and came across the same issue...I believe the options were JB3 and JB5...pretty sure its just light and heavy duty...I went with light duty and the JB3 and made out fine....I'm sure the better informed will chime in soon

Re: Brake booster

The "JB" number isn't on the vehicle. You have to get it from a supplier or from GM. When you talk to them, know your rear shoe sizes, rotor diameter and thickness. I can tell you 3\4 ton codes but nothing else. If yours is a 3\4 and the rear shoes are 2 X13 it's JB5 if they are 2.5 X13 they are JB8. jim

Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.

Re: Brake booster

I had a very similat problem with trying to replace my master cylinder, I finally pulled the casting numbers off the old one, and had an old timer that knew how to use the books and not the computer to help me find the right one. The problem was different sized fittings for the front and rear brake lines.

Re: Brake booster

Check around, a brake specialty shop maybe able to rebuild your old one. I also believe its cheaper this way.
The only place I used was in So. California, it was "Bush Power Brake" Ask for Steve. He's in National City (next to San Diego) 619-474-8906 Call him for a price, just to see.

Re: Brake booster

Man did I ever learn my lesson with the whole JB thing.

Mine is a regular 1/2 ton 2wd C-10, but, it has the Heavy Duty brakes. I didn't even know about until I had to replace a brake hose and the mounting head on it was completely different from what everyone wanted to sell me. I could have sworn the info was on my buildsheet in the glovebox. But, I don't remember seeing the JB numbers there, so I'm pretty sure James is right.

Re: Brake booster

If I remember right the JB number correlates to the GVW of the truck. The size of the shoes also helps in determining the number. A "real" parts store that has books can be a huge benefit too. The first time I ever went into an Auto Zone I asked the guy if he could look in the book, he told me they don't have any books. I hate Auto Zone. Sorry, off the soap box now.
