Crossover steering, what do I need?

I know a couple of you guys have done crossover steering(Pont, 6869704x4) what exactly do I need? Call me "tupid" but could you make like a shopping list for the items needed? It will be for a D44 on a '71 with 3.73's.

I just started this project on some 3/4 Ton axles for my 85 GMC Suburban. I got alot of help from the guys on this forum. They sent me to www.partsmike.com He has everything you need. The total came out to less than $600 He is very knowlagable and friendly. Check him out.

Mr. mkmiller1, I would be glad to help out. If your on a budget and don't wanna spend $600, there are more affordable ways to do the swap. It also helps to be in good with someone who welds and does metal fabrication. I'm into my crossover setup for about $150.

I'm just heading out the door and won't be back til late tonight but when I get in, I'll either send you a private message or post here all the parts you'll need and what all is involved. If you wanna read through the following post, I think I describe all the parts that I used to make my crossover setup.

I'm really not wanting to spend $600 bucks on the truck just yet(at least for crossover). I'll appreciate any info you can send my way, I've got a neighbor who is a welder by trade(we work out good deals-he tells me"Will weld for beer") and I'm pretty handy around the truck. Thanks for the "MR." Pont, but I'm only 21 with 9 years experience(i.e.30); you make me feel older.LOL Y'all can email me any info at mkmiller@magnolia-net.com and I love pics!!! This will only be a FUN truck with minimal FUNDS put into it hopefully.

Pont knows where to find better deals than me. I didn't shop around that much. Posted on the forum I was doing my lift and the cross over steering came up and partsmike's name came up a few times. I went with him because he had the complete kit.

Pont,

Hey man I still have another Suburban that I plan on doing the cross over to. Any info you could send that would save me money would be greatly appreciated.


The kit includes all new parts:
PMPs New casting tall knuckles
Spicer ball joints with snap ring, cotter pin, nuts, adjuster
Spindle studs and nuts
PMPs *Custom flat arms or **Super arms
High steer studs
Cone washers
Lock nuts
Stop bolt and nut

Kit with custom flat arms. Part # SP1101KK $699*
Kit with super arms. Part # SP1102KK $739**

Also I am wanting to do the disc brake conversion to both burbans. Do you have any advice?

Good luck on the cross over steering. Post us some before and after pics when you are done. How big of a lift did you go with?

My parts list.
D44 axle with blown chunk. $50 (for axle shafts and disc knuckles)
Machine work for right knuckle. $60
Steering arm and stud kit from Shakerbuilt $110(to my door)
Drag link(1.25 tubing threaded for Chevy drag link ends) from Shakerbuilt $73(to my door)
Pitman arm from 70s fullsize jeep(DONT USE THIS ONE) $10
4x2 steering box $25

I also bought new ball joints, tie-rod ends, and brakes. This cost more than the parts for the steering mod.

Ryan, I'm not sure I would be any help on the disc brake conversions. I simply took the old closed knuckle Dana 44 drum brake front axle out of my truck and put in an open knuckle Dana 44 disc brake front axle. The newer front axle came out of an 80 Blazer (I don't know if it was original or not) and it was a bolt in swap. As far as changing knuckles or spindles from drum to disc, I wouldn't have a clue. Sorry........

Thanks for the help and advice so far.

Ryan-I'll post the pics when I start the process and somplete till finish. I've got the blazer drivetrain torn into a million pieces but will have it back together by weeks end. Then I'll start on the "jackup" as my 3 yr.old daughter calls it. It's only going to have a 4" lift(maybe a 2" body as well) and will just be a toy.

6869704x4-What all did the machine shop do on the right knuckle? I just want to know, if I have it done that way, what to expect of them on price for what they do.

Pont-Thanks for the description and pics! My 5 yr. old son could figure it out with that description.

mkmiller, He machined the top of the knuckle and drilled and tapped 3 holes. I took the Shakerbuilt steering arm and left knuckle in so he would have a reference.

Ryan, Swapping the whole axle is pretty easy. But if your doing new balljoints you have every thing apart anyway. My experience was on a 70 drum axle. To make everything fit right I had to swap from the knuckle on out. And I used the newer beefier axle shafts. The only parts I reused were my locking hubs.

Thats a good site. Whats cool about 1st gen trucks is that they are easier to do xover steering than the newer ones. No xmember issues.
