I want to put a new GM HEI in my 402BB.Whats involved in the switch over? and what year HEI do I need?where's the best place to buy one? and how much do they run? Thanks everyone.

Go to a junk yard, find some v8 chevy from the 70's, get it, rebuild it, and drive away happy.

i bought mine from a motor salvage place here where i live for $20...the guy checked about 15 of them til he found one where the shaft had little or no play in it....bought a new cap,rotor and wires and mine works great

Salvage (Junk) Yard
Go to the junk yard. You'll get your best money out of it that way. I'm sure there's a good junk yard in your area. I went and got one last summer; they must have taken pity on me because I'm a girl and gave me a good one. With the help of many people on this board (THANKS) I got new innards and put it in.
I'm a decent mechanic, some times just good enough to be dangerous. I'm sure you can do it. Pat

You can buy a new Accel HEI from Jegs for $103, $135 with a high-pefrormance coil. That seems to be the best deal on brand new HEI's. I wouldn't hesitate to stab a junkyard HEI in your motor though.

This is one item I would NEVER go to the dealer for...they would want more than the performace ones in Jegs or Summit.
I say hit the junk yards... but nothing wrong with getting a new one. |

Pertronix II...I bought mine from Summit for my 402 BB...Has the factory look which is what I was after. Two years and no problems.

Scoggin dickey chevrolet has the best dealership pricing and parts inventory of performance stuff. $229 for a new OEM with performance curve isnt bad. I'd stay away from the cheaper repros . After I replaced the ignition module in my summit distributor with an MSD unit, replaced the cap, vacuum can and rotor its finally a good working distributor. Before I did all that it wouldnt go over 4500 rpm without hiccuping or just plain dieing.

MSD ready to run....its a small body HEI..you can buy it for around 239.00...it is the best by far....

Well you can do what I did, just order an Accel HEI w/ Coil for 139.99 from http://www.jegs.com , hell I will even give you a part # as well.. 110-59107C... I bought one of these back in 2001.. Plus for the price, why buy used especially if you get one from a Junkyard, you might as well replace Cap, Rotor, Coil, and module... Right there is where you will be ending up spend 20 for the Used Distributer and another 130 - 150 depending on where you go... Damn if you would have asked for one about 3 months ago, I could have sold you a GM Hei w/ wires for $ 40 + shipping...
Well to tell you the truth if you buy one from GM they are going to rape you, take this into consideration Jeg's sells a GM Hei (same distributer that you can buy from GM) for $ 239.99.. For that kind of money, just buy the Accell and save yourself $ 100...
