Any s10 tranny guru's on here?
Hey guys. I've got a '95 2.2 5 speed S10 and I want to swap in an automatic. I know that the "official direct swap" would have to be a '95 only automatic from behind another 2.2 (they are year specific), but what I am hearing from other tranny guys locally here is that the 2.2, 2.5 and the 2.8 all have the same bell housing bolt pattern and that if I get the right year model 700R4 from behind a 2.8 or whatever (supposedly from '87 to 92 because of the speedo hookups) that I can just buy the flex plate and swap it right in with an aftermarket shifter. Can anyone here verify these facts for me? Thanks guys, ............Jerry

Very possible, guess that is one way to get around having to swap wiring also. I know the 2.8, and 2.5 have the same bolt pattern for the bell housing. 2.2 I'm not sure about.
One other thing you'll need to consider in the balancing of the motors. are the 2.2's internally balanced or externally balanced? thats my thoughts, hopefully someone else will chime in.

Re: Any s10 tranny guru's on here?
i believe you can swap in any trans from an s10 from 94 to 97. im not sure about 98 and up. going over to automatic i think you may have to do some wiring and computer changes. the pcm controles the transmissions shift points from input on throttle possition and engine load. so im sure you will have to change the computer and wire in the trans. im not 100% on this so i would look into it to be sure.
just wonderinf why are you going to an automatic. i would never give up my 4 speed. |

Re: Any s10 tranny guru's on here?
Just tired of shifting. The 700R4 would also not require a computer if I just used the TCI conversion kit like I have on my '67. As far as balancing is concerned, isn't that taken care of at the flywheel? I plan on buying a new flywheel for the '95 2.2, I'm figuring that the only problems I would run into would be the speedo cable connection, the bell housing bolt pattern and the torque converter bolting up. From what I have read they are both the same length, so there shouldn't be any drive shaft issues. Anybody else have any info or can elaborate on what I'd like to do? Please jump in and help me out......... Thanks guys, ...Jerry

As far as the speedo connection, I believe I have seen conversion kits to go from mechanical to pulse, or whatever they call the electronic device. Some of the later 700r4s should use the electronic pulse for speed.
