?'s about 79 front end.

Are the brakes, ie knuckles out the same on a 79 as a 70 with drum brakes? I can get a 79, but it has a different ratio than the one I would replace it with. Trying to see if I could use the knucles out for the swap.

Thanks

Mark

There are a few differences on the front ends, but most of the parts will interchange. The 79 should have disc brakes, the larger axles and spindles. The knuckles will interchange without a problem. To change axles, spindles, and swap to the disc brakes should not be a problem.

The '79 will most likely be a 10 bolt, although it could still be a Dana 44. The '70 axle will have the smaller 260-X steering u-joints, which means that if you want to swap to the bigger joints, you would have to swap the inner shafts also. The inner shafts from a 10 bolt are 28 spline, and they will not swap with the 30 spline Dana 44 shafts. If you just swap the spindles, hubs, rotors, brake backing plates, calipers, and lockouts, and leave the shafts alone, everything should work.

Tim is correct on the axle spline differences. I should have noted that both need to be 44's to swap the parts. I assumed (a bad thing to do) we were talking about two 44's here.

Thanks for your help guys, I think I will try and find a 73 thru 78 Dana 44 for the swap.
