Pulling pitman arm
Has anyone used a plain gear puller to pull a pitman arm? Any luck? Any advice?

In general they are on quite tight, a regular puller will probably spread the jaws and pop off, but try it first. I use a puller designed for that purpose.

i've used a gearpuller to remove pitman arms the thing to keep in mind with a gear puller is they're not designed to work by just screwing it down the proper way to use them is to screw them down to moderate pressure then rap the end with a hammer and repeat the process if you just tighten them with a wrench you can and will evenyually strip the threads

Buy a pitman arm puller. It's a must. Don't screw around trying to get it off with some half-assed puller. It's not worth messing up the pitman arm, or your steering box output shaft.

I pulled mine of at least 3 times Friday using a pickle fork (see my post on the suspension board for the "why"). I have access to air so it was real easy. I wouldn't hesitate to use a manual fork and a BFH (Big Freakin' Hammer). Just go easy on the splines. Maybe a shop rag around the shaft would work. Good Luck.

Pitman arm pullers....
you can rent 'em for a good price, but they are cheaper if you just buy it. @ auto zone you get all your money back after you return a rented one.

I just replace the pitman arm on my K25 and it came off just using my hands (after I took the bolt out) the new one went on with a little wiggling and grease no hammering). Mine has power steering if it makes a difference.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm |
