Re: Tail Light Upgrades

Blue Dots are an instant Johnny-Law pull over in my neck of the woods, but I too would like to go with some stunning LED's behind my stock red lenses.

Wouldn't even care about spending some real money to convert the stock bulbs out - as I'm sick of people on my tail as I'm coming down to a spot where I'm going to turn a corner or into a driveway.

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

LMC offered LED's for 60-66 awhile back, but when I ordered them.....they said they were discontinued.

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

They sell complete led tail lights that look close to the original. Rocka has the white ones that glow red. But there are all red ones.

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

Anybody have any wiring diagrams for diy LED conversions? I would be willing to try to build a set myself, but I am not the best in designing appropriate electronic schematics.

How many LEDs would you think would be necessary to light a taillamp sufficiently? What about the turn signals/brake lights?

Post your ideas!

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

Musclerodz sells complete sealed LED units which just attach to the housing like a normal lense and uses the factory socket. Plus he's a vendor here. I got my LEDs for my stepper from him.

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

EBAY has them in the parts section as we speak. They have the one that are a full assy that is clear or red lens. any were from 50 to 80 bucks for the set.
They plug right into the bulb socket and then screw in like a regular lens.

trust me, you'll be VERY happy... much much brighter than 1157's. No complaints from me at all.

what do you mean by this? The housing ground through the sheetmetal, and i'm not sure on fleetsides, but I actually ran a ground wire from my housings straight to the frame just for insurance.

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

The PO had wrapped a stripped copper wire around the base of the socket and attached it to the sheet metal for a ground.

Not workin out too well for me.

I thought about drilling a small hole in the socket and soldering a wire to it and running it to the frame.

Just lookin to see what the masses have done.

I had a hell of a time getting mine to ground. I ended up soldering a wire on the back side of the socket and ran it down to the frame and it works perfect!

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

For the price of $55, I don't think it would be worth my time trying to build them on my own.

Re: Tail Light Upgrades

It seems no one else has tried just the LED bulbs.....thats what Ive used in both the pickup and the 'burb. A pair cost about 15 bucks and they plug right in to the socket. They do not have the overall look of the replacement tails, but they are much brighter than an 1157.
