Took the valve covers off of my 396 for the first time today to attempt a valve adjustment. To my surprise I noticed some rather large holes next to half of the push rods (all on the intake side). The holes were all on the (lookers) left of the #1, #5, #4, and #8 intake valves.
the motor has been running, albeit rough, so I am not sure when/how these happened. How are these caused? Are they catastrophic? Is this considered normal? What should my course of action be at this point? ![]() Thanks!

Re: Are these holes bad?
looks like a casting porosity? just a guess.
I am no expert and I didn't spend the night at a Comfort Hotel.

Wow, yeah, those can't be fixed! I would take that engine out and ship it to me at your expense! JK/

Re: Are these holes bad?
Thats just normal casting "flash" nothing to worry about. If you ever have the heads off, you can clean that up with a die grinder if you want it to look better.

Re: Are these holes bad?
I agree, just normal oil return passages. No worries.
