Noisy lifters? Need help Please

Ok I have finally started driving my truck and It was sitting for 2 years prior to me purchasing it. At first when I got her running there wasnt much noise coming from the motor. But today I drove it about 70 miles and she started ticken alot. It had a slight tick before but now its pretty loud.
I was woundering if you all had any experiance with noisy lifters and ever tried to tighten the rocker arms to cure the problem. I know the motor is very tired and I need a new one but was hoping to make it through the summer with this one. I was thinking of trying to tighten the noisy lifters. (Take of driverside valve cover and see what I can find with it running anb see if I cant get it to quite down) What do ya think?

How much oil pressure do you have?

After sitting awhile lifters get gum(varnish) on them. And will stick.

Change the oil then replace a quart or two of oil with tranny fluid(or Marvel Mystery oil) then run it for awhile.

This should fix the issue.

I have done this many times with great success.

Few years ago i bought a 67 Mercury Cougar. It had sat for 33 years not running. Motor was stuck. I MEAN STUCK. Took me 2 months to get it really turning over. Took the carb off, dumped tranny fluid strait down the intake. Let it soak.

Finally got it running. Did exactly like i told you to do. NO issues.

Unless you think your valves may need adjusted. Then its a different issue.

I think its a varnish issue, I replaced the intake and had the exhaust manifold off I was able to see the valves through the exhaust ports abd a few were very varnished. Im gunna try the tranny fluid thing. Do I substitute quart for quart then?

Are you sure it's a lifter? How do the exhaust gaskets look, and have you tried seeing if any of the exhaust man/header bolts are loose at the head? If stock, does it have the original heat valve in the down pipe? Sometimes the spring gets lost/broken, and the valve will tick when it's just floppin around with the exhaust gases goin by.

This is the only product I will use. They use this stuff in the motors on big ships. I just started a 70 pick-up that had not been started in 9 years. I changed the oil and the lifters were still making noise added 1 pint of sea foam and no lifter noise! GREAT STUFF!

No I dont think its the exhaust. It has stock manifolds and I just replaced the gaskets. i also checked them to insure they were tight. It is definetally a lifter type noise. If ya take off the breather cap and get close to the hole you can really hear thr noise. As for the sea foam I have use it before. Maybe I should try it first as I just changed the oil not to long ago and would hate to waste the money. So put the seafoam in the oil or the gas or both?

Start it and pour some marvel mystery oil down the carb it worked on my chevelle.

I do love this stuff also.

Mine started ticking on me after I bought it, I tried seafoam.. cleaned the carb. I ran it twice through with oil changes, tried different weight oil, marvel mystery oil. I got it down to where it would tick for a few mins till pumped up. then she finally started to tick again all the time. so now it's cam and lifters.

my .02 is the seafoam. I don't like any other engine cleaner.

All of the above mentioned products will help with sticky lifters,valves,and carbon deposits.
stick the vacuum hose from the PCV in the bottle and let it suck some through the motor. WARNING************* if you live in a community with real close neighbors they will hate you while doing this********
the motor will smoke BADDDDD and put some in the oil at least a QT and leave 1 Qt of oil out,run the motor some and see if it cures the noisy lifters.
Another good trick to clean out a motor is to use a synthetic oil,not a blend but straight synthetic,the down side to this is any all possible oil leaks will leak. just make sure whatever you do to change the oil around 100-200 miles and the filter,because all this carbon and sludge you are knocking loose is clogging the oil filter and may get into the bearings,and then bad things happen.

It could just be a rocker arm that is backed off a little. I would strt it run it to temp and then try and to back each rocker off till it ticks and tighten a half to 3/4 of a turn. This will also help you find the lifter if all of the rockers are right.

You substitue quart for quart tranny fluid for oil.

i always use valve medic from advance auto parts it has worked everytime for me its designed specifically for lifters if it doesnt work then you need new lifters

Take off the valve cover on that side and get a looksee at whats going on in there. I had a 305 in my van that ticked for a long time and then started to pop out of the carb.Thought for sure the cam was bad but decided to look anyway and the pushrod had worn out on the top and made the thing tick then as it got worse the rocker arm feel off then it started poping. My 71 p/u started ticking loud just all of the sudden one day too and was also a pushrod.I think they get plugged up and the rocker starves for oil and they wear out. Also I hate to say it BUT being a 307 a bad cam is always something to consider. How many miles?

Well I adjusted my lifters today with some advise from Longhorn Man, I was able to quiet her down alot, but it still has a mild ticking at higher RPM but that is expected. The odometer reads 13000+ so im assuming she has 213000 miles. Thanks all for the great advise as always.
