Any time you're low on oil or it has anything other than oil in it, stop right then, your bearings will thank you. I've had a truck towed home before just so I could get the water out without cranking it up.

Yeah don't worry about messing the old filter up if you have to squach it a bit or jab a hole in it, you're going to throw it away anyway.

When you put a new filter on, put oil on the filter gasket, make sure the engine is clean where the filter seats, and put the filter on hand tight only, don't use the filter wrench.
