Tilt Column Lower Bearing
What holds the lower steering column bearing on the shaft? It looks to me like the adapter, retainer, and spring, have nothing to do with it?
Anybody know? |

Re: Tili Column Lower Bearing
Hey Michael so we meet again. There is a large flat washer and a spring goes between bearing and intermediate shaft. Same set up on a non tilt.

Re: Tili Column Lower Bearing
Hey Kevin,
I kept trying to make the bearing sit down into the plastic "adapter". It just didn't fit. But what you're saying is that the flat washer and spring hold the bearing in place. And I guess the adapter kind of keeps it centered? Michael |

Re: Tili Column Lower Bearing
Correct. But the bearing does snap into the plastic retainer about a 1/4 inch

Re: Tili Column Lower Bearing
A spring is not used on the tilt column lower bearing.
The lower bearing snaps into the plastic retainer. The plastic retainer has to be out of the column in order to get the bearing to snap in. Heating up the plastic in hot water helps but it can be a tight fit. Jim

Re: Tilt Column Lower Bearing
Update....did what you said....heated it up a little in a cup of hot water. Laid it on top of the retainer......eye-balled level.....one tap with a hard rubber mallet and it jumped right in...thanks again guys.
