Another what tire size
Ok... the Jimmy has 35's on it with 4" suspension lift. Every once in a while when I really ride it hard and jump things the tire will touch the front inner finder and crease it in. I have a 3" body lift I can put on it but I am afraid the 35's will look funny with a total lift of 7". What does everyone think and does anyone have any pics of 7" with 35's? The other option is to go with taller tires with the lift but I am running 308's for gears so it's good on long trips. 35's run fine with the 308's because I have a SM465 trans with the low gear and the NP241c. Would taller tires be too much for this Transmission - Transfer Case - Axle Ratio combination? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Another what tire size
Yours looks great and I guess a 67-72 lifted is about the same as mine.
Great looking truck.

Re: Another what tire size
Cool, thanks.
I would guess they are fairly close, fist-gen Blazers may have bigger wheel wells, higher up in the center..never realy compared them..

Yeah.. I really like your rear bumper with the swing out. I have been wanting to get one of those built for my 69 Suburban 4x4.

Re: Another what tire size
Look close I have had two types.
The first pic with the 'camo' mess is my current rear bumper/swing out. I made that one. The first carrier I had is in the other two photos, it was made by Kayline (long gone now). It worked ok, but it was mounted to the body and the frame/bumper so when wheeling the flex from the body and the frame were twisting the gate mounts. The new one I made is bumper/frame mounted only. Something to think about..

Re: Another what tire size
Yeah Burt... the one in the camo picture is the one I was talking about 4 sure. I can see how the other would be a problem under flex.
Steinbrin... There is no way I am going to cut mine. And I don't think my 10 bolt with 308's could handle the 38's.

Re: Another what tire size
in that case, your only real limiting factor is you current axle situation. with stock 1/2 axles and 3.08 gears, do not go any bigger than 35"s if you ever want to drive the truck. that being said, keep it exactly how it is just trim the bottom/back of the fender (or where ever) so that it doesn't rub when compressed. just take your time and be careful when trimming. there is a million other guys who are in the same situation as you, check out the CK5 forums for pictures. and just throw that body lift away, it's useless. once, if ever, you upgrade you drivetrain and actually start wheeling it, you wont need the BL. I have 39.5TSL with 4" of lift on my 79k10

Re: Another what tire size
bmeredith, I live in Louisiana an this is flat land. That being said, High water is an issue and the extra lift would be helpful in my situation for access to hunting property. Rock crawling and such is not in the picture what so ever. I know many prople do not like body lifts but are you saying they are useless in a rock crawling situation? What do ya think?

Re: Another what tire size
I`d put zero-rates up front and stay with 35s.I love that Blazer.I had a`90 w/4spd & 3.08s that I ran 33s on with spring work that raised it about 2" up front, which leveled it up.I got stung trying to buy a soft top from STC when they went under in a very shifty way.CK5 had them listed for months after the phone was disconnected.ARGH!!!
I now have an`86 CUCV I want to put all my`91 3/4t Burb stuff under(4" EZ-rides,35" MTRs,4L80E,4.10s,14-bolt FF. Did I mention how much I like yours? It looks perfect.Shame about the fender contact.Try those 0-rates.

Re: Another what tire size
Hey Special-K... My soft top is from STC but I have had it about 5 years though. I had tried to contact them recently too and found they had closed shop. I was just courious what happened when you got stung by them? Thanks for the complement on my 89. I really like it and have had it a long time and I don't think I will ever get rid of it.
Why is everyone so against body lifts though? I have a 69 burb 4x4 that has a body lift plus suspension lift and I have never had any problems to my knowledge.

Re: Another what tire size
i've had both 1" bl and 3" on a 76 i had before. the 1" was fine but i had nothing but problems with the 3". i put the fan into the rad once when i tried dragracing some buddy and once flexing because there was so much body flex. and it seemed like i wore out the two rear cab body mounts twice as fast. if i were dealing with high water crossings, i would like to raise both my chassis and body as much as possible. since then, i've never liked to look of a truck with a BL. your rig looks so good as is, a little trimming might go a long way. if you dont mind the work, moving your front axle a couple inches forward would be the best solution
i see were you are coming from though, luckily for me, mines just a toy so i can cut the crap out of it. i just got done cutting the rockers out today! Last edited by bmeredith; 04-12-2009 at 01:30 AM. |
