700r4 Speedmeter Help!! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I purchased a used 700r4 transmission for my truck and had it rebuilt by a professional shop. Since it was my first time installing it in the truck, I wanted to get the correct plastic speedo gears to have a correctly reading speedometer.

I recently purchased the correct plastic gears and have found that my transmission might have been used in an electronic speedo? Can someone look at this picture and tell me if I am on the right path? From what I can tell, you can't remove this metal gear.

Is there any way to convert this to work with the speedo cable on my truck? I already spent a ton on the rebuild and I would like to get the speedo to work correctly.

That gear is pressed in place on the output shaft. You can drive it off to the rear of the shaft and there should be a hole in the shaft that holds the clip for the plastic speedometer drive gear. Any other questions call me at 972-335-9823

I am in the same boat, I thought that I could get an electronic Speedo that would hook up to it?

Like 409 says that relucter can be taken off & a plastic speedo gear put on but you should check the rear houseing & see if the housing for the driven gear will fit & mesh right. You may have to get a different rear tail housing. I know that is the way it is on the T-5 manual trans.

425HP is correct. there should be a small clip that holds the drive gear to the output shaft. I had a 700 in my 67 Chevelle, and could not find the right combination for it. I took the car to a speedometer shop here in Jax FL, and Chris made me a reducer that attaches to the driven gear housing. The reducer screws onto where the speedo cable would go, and the speedo cable attaches the reducer. It cost about $100 bucks, but I knew I was going 100 when I was. This might be an easier way to make you speedo read correct

I was going to update everyone, but you beat me to it. I purchased a 8 inch gear pulley and was able to pull the metal gear ring out.

Once I had the metal gear ring our, I slid my plastic ring get over the shaft and clipped it in with the small clip. Everything is working fine now, but when I first saw it, I wasn't sure what the next step was.
