am/fm radio

I have what I believe is a van am/fm radio. It looks very similar to our truck radios. My question is where do I get this thing serviced/repaired. Hopefully in the pacific northwest and hopefully cheap. I've tried hooking a speaker, power etc but can't get a sound. It has the same three plugs as our truck radios, but I dont know which one is what. Are there any professionals out there? i don't want to spend too much on a van radio. thanks

I am not familiar with the Van radios, but on the 71-72's the power wire plugs in and the two speaker wires piggy back on top of the the power wire plug.

I have to believe that your radio is similiar, that two of the terminals are for the speaker and the other is for the power.

I can look at a radio tonight to see what end the power wire is on
or you might be able to discern which is which by using an ohm meter. One wire from the speaker should be ground to the case, and the other speaker wire will be output from the radio. To check the power lead connect you ohm meter to the radio light and turn the radio on. The power wire can then be read. If you know the power wire than the other two are speaker wires and if it does not play with the hookup, then the radio is bad.

I don't know of any repair shops in your area.

Im pretty sure that when I took my truck apart the power was the one on the drivers side of the radio and the other side hade the speaker. I would call around to some vcr ar electronics repair places to see what they say. Mine was an AM and wasnt working so I took it apart and found a wire broke, cleaned it up and resolders the wike and it actualy worked.

the one closest to the center of the radio and that is farther apart than the other two is the power

Looking at the back of my radio with the plug on the right as you look at it, the power is on the right, speaker positive is in the middle, and speaker ground is on the left. You may want to get the speaker wire and plug for it before you test it.

To test the radio, hook the speaker wires up, (two), hook power up, ground the case and with an attenna the radio should play.

If it does not play, then there is a problem. The rheostats on the old radios can cause a problem and spraying with contact cleaner while working the volume knob will usually clear it up. Other than that, you will need a radio repair person.

Hey guys, I am starting to feel real bad about this! I am getting a little confused. When I looked at my 71 am/fm in the truck, (I am upsidedown while doing this) the wiring appeared to be the same as the am radio, but it is actually reversed after looking at the pic of the radio that is posted. I am posting a picture of the plug and if you plug it into the radio as pictured the power will be on the left as you look at it.

On my picture, power is red, speaker + is green, and speaker ground is black.

I am sorry for the confusion! I am going to the junkyard for some therapy!

Thanks everyone...I guess I'll give it another try before I bring it in. Still unclear as to who fixes these things. I'll give "Johns old car radio repair" at the Monroe swap meet a try, but definately don't want a "restoration" Just want to fix whats wrong as it is a van radio.

Ok....loking at my picture above. The plug on the right is grounded to the case. So hooked (-) speaker to that & hooked (+) speaker to the center and power to the one on the left. I turn it on and I get a hummm out of the speaker. There is no static just hummm doesn't change with volume control, just same hummmm. ???? Any suggestions?

I don't have an antenna to plug into it, so I just stuck a piece of wire in there, don't know if it really made a connection or not.

try some electronics cleaner, spray it around on the inside of the radio. like jim said spray the internal workings of the volume knob while turning it back and forth.

You may also be able to tell while you have it appart which plug is power.

I sprayed electronic cleaner all over this thing....the am/fm switch had some dark copper on it, but the rest of the circuits looked pretty good. I let it dry and tested it and still just a hummm out of the speaker????
