Budget junkyard stuff

I want to do a few things to my truck, like put an electric double fan on it....A friend that I was talking to the other day and I told him I wanted to put a serpentine belt on it too and he told me that I should be able to get an serpentine setup from the junkyard as well, but he didn't know from what.If anybody out there that knows what I'm talking about and could help I'd really appreciate it alot .Thanks

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

Just off the top of my head, I can think of the Chevy Caprice (cop cars, aka Shamu), or the Impalas. The rear wheel drive, not the front wheel drive versions. They have the dual electric fans and serpentine belts. I think the civilian Caprice had one electric fan, not sure if they upgraded them to dual later on.

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

I have the serp. setup from a late 80's S-10 w/ the 4.3 V6. Everything bolts up just fine. However, you'll need to buy a delete pulley in place of the smog pump, which is only available @ GM for about $60. I've heard some of the late 80's C/K trucks and some Astro panel vans with the 4.3 came without the smog pump, but I've never seen one. Also, if you are not running AC- you can also get that delete pulley from NAPA for about 28 bucks.
I don't have any suggestions on which vehicles you can swap a pair of electric fans from.....I just run the stock clutch unit and haven't had any cooling issues.

yeah the impalas and caprices have them and that is what I have but to make them work would require a lot of fabrication because the fans are a little to big to go side by side....I wonder are the newer van fans, electric fans?My thinking is that they would be electric, because of the limited space.

Thanks for the advice Dingfodgy,no cooling issues either just like the look and it makes it a little quieter.

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

A lot of the front wheel drive cars use electric fans, due to the engine layout.

I have seen some nice dual electric fan setups, but I think you would have to find out how much CFM the fans put out. I have owned two '85 Toyota Camrys with dual fan setups and they are narrow. However, they are designed for a 2 litre 4 cyn engine. How much CFM would a V8 need under hot summer day? You might rethink the dual setup and go for a large single fan. Just IMHO

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

I believe two small fans will outperform one large fan, the same reason two small intake valves will outperform one larger one, more flow thruogh more opening.

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

If you go to a serpentine belt system you have to get the correct water pump also. The serpentine pump runs in reverse to the V belt driven pump. This usually causes problems when a guy buys a late engine and installs it in an early truck and uses V belts instead of the the Serpentine belt that originally came on the engine.
I first ran into the problem with a mid 80's Camaro that someone had swapped an older 350 with V belts into and then bought a water pump to fit the year of the car instead of the engine and belt combination in the car.

As for the electric fans, look at late 80's and later front wheel drive Cadillac big cars. I've got an 88 with a pair of fans that really pull some air and they are the thin design.

Hey greygoose,

look at this thread...not sure if it'll work for a serp setup, but click on the link in the first post for a good electric fan setup...http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=286370

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

bunch of serp info here:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=233335

I used a serp setup from a '94 suburban. you could use suburban /truck. bolted right up. you do need a reverse water pump, and the '94 water pump bolted right up as well. you can view my build thread to see it installed on the '67

good luck

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

You will also need a different upper rad hose. And a swivel 360 thermo housing. Upper hose get that new for a GMC 94 4 WD hose upper will work.(maybe other vortec/ serp v-8setups too) Maybe issues with power steering pump lines because of the o fittings.

Re: Budget junkyard stuff

I used dual fans off of a late 90's Taurus. They are very plentiful in junkyards and I paid $30 for both. I had my brother in law bend some sheet metal to make a shroud. I also grabbed a few relays out of the Taurus and with a thermal switch for about $15 set it up to turn the fans on at 195 and off at 180. You can also set them up to run both at high speed when A/C is on. These Taurus fans are dual speed and pull a bunch of air. I have had no problems with overheating and I am in Florida. The serpentine setup is off of a 1990 chevrolet 1500 5.7.
