327?????

Hey guys got a opportunity at getting a 1965 327 from a local guy. He has had it about 3 years, rotates the motor at least once a month, has never been rebuilt that he knows of, so would be original!! My question is how would this engine work or fit in my k20 4" lift 33" tires??? More or less HP than my hecho cicho crate motor???

Re: 327?????

It will fit fine dimension-wise. Those motors are known to be high-winding, and generally work best in lighter cars with a lot of gear. I would try for a 383/400 for a lifted truck.

Re: 327?????

WOW I take it not many of you are running a 327 in a 4x4, would I be better off asking one of the other older truck forums???? Before a 350 wasn't it 327 an 396 in GM trucks???

Re: 327?????

It is a short stroke motor that is not as well suited to a 4x4.

Re: 327?????

I agree with everyone else. I would not do a 327 in a four wheel drive. Really i wouldn't use one in any truck. I think that the 327 would be put to better use in a car. Now I am not saying it would not work it could but the rpm's have to be up b4 it will produce a good amount of power giving you less control over wheel spin. With a very tall gear this could be overcome but you would lose highway speed exponentially.

Re: 327?????

I've got a 327 in my '87 with 4" of lift and 4.56 gears.... it moves the truck around, but I would look for something with more displacement.

Re: 327?????

well in the 327s defense there is a couple of guys in the light 4x4s use them around here also in the military class trucks 9,000 rpms (the jeeps and toyotas) to compensate for the transfer cases's & 7.20 gear ratio in the same turn these 327's are built up .

just a thought but whats the guy asking for the engine... They are getting to be a very hard engine to find.. well around here at least. might be worth holding on to for a future sale.

Re: 327?????

My Dad had one in a truck and loved it. '67 365hp engine. The other thing no one has mentioned is this could be a low hp 327, so unless you plan to rebuild it, you won't gain anything.

Re: 327?????

Now THAT my friend is a dated engine. I don't know when the U.S. went away from an air vented crankcase breather!! The 327 was quite a performer in its heyday. Factory assembled with a 4 speed they would kick name and take butt. They would wind so high I've seen them blow the bottoms off the stock piston skirts. The cylinder heads were designed to make power with high-test gasoline. The model you see there would probably not have hardened valves or seats, and might suffer not having lead in what we call gasoline nowadays. The heads do not have angled plugs, and would suffer pinging with that old distributor I.M.H.O.
Looking at the resources left to us by the tree huggers, I'd avoid that engine for a truck.
The 350 trannie has no overdrive or lock-up converter so if geared for power, you would have a wasteful cruise gear ratio. The object of the game is to have the cruising RPM less than 2000 for economy and noise nowadays, but if you don't care, press on.

Re: 327?????

thanks bill my dad was like a kid in a candy store when he saw it, an like you said in its hey day it was a good little motor, but in todays society an economy, not such a eco-friendly!!!! These musta been fun little motors in the corvettes thats for power weight ratio musta made for a nice little combo!!!

Re: 327?????

I guess I'm an old fart. I've had quite a few 327's and could make them scream with only minor mods. I love the 327. In my eyes it's still the best small block ever made. I never had one in a four wheel drive, but had plenty in heavy and light cars back in the day. Thats a great price in my opinion. I dont know if anyone else mentioned it or not, but the heads don't have your accessory holes drilled so you would have to come up with different mounts. Does it have double hump heads? I can't really tell by the pictures. Is that an AFB carb sitting on it? Looks like he has it sitting on backwards. Wish I was up that way, I'd snag it up in a heartbeat!

Re: 327?????

My brother in law has a 327 in his '82 1/2 ton 4x4 backed by the stock truck 4 speed. He used to mud bog it before he fixed it up and the thing did great! The high winding 327 was perfect for getting across the pit. I have a 327 in my '62 c10 and I LOVE IT! It's got 3.73's, and th350 and a GearVendors overdrive. It's a great combo and it moves the truck like nothing. I've been challenged a few times and I've come out victorious a few times. Not bad for a truck...
