Eaton Rear axle Spindles
I am pulling parts off of an old Eaton rear axle that I aquired for the 4:10 3rd member a few years ago so it is time to clean house. I decided to save the axle shafts and drums and got the drum off of one side............it was brutle!!! Shoes rusted to drum making it near impossible to remove, some clever prybar work, penetrating oil etc. and I got the one side off to save the hub and drum assembly.
I rattled the 4 bolts off that hold the backing plate and I thought spindle on. Does the spindle come off of the axle housing?? Is it machined in place?? Some moderate persuasion didn't move anything so I thought it best to inquire....................anyone know for sure???

Re: Eaton Rear axle Spindles
The spindles are welded to the tubes.

I don't forsee abusing the truck and I guess if worse came to worse if something goes then an upgrade would be in order.

Re: Eaton Rear axle Spindles
Yes, all the full floating (rear) axles have the spindles welded to the tubes. You do occasionally see someone cut off a bad spindle (usually spun bearings) and weld on a replacement but it is normally easier to just find a new housing.

Re: Eaton Rear axle Spindles
Routine (or far beyond intervals) maintainence is all it took to last forever. If you gaul an axle spindle, shame on you. It`s not a normally replacable part and only abouse can damage it.
Save all the parts! It`s an ironic viscious cycle.People are swapping them out because parts are hard to find.Parts are hard to find because people are scrapping them. Most just needed a brake job and parts are available and will continue to be as long as people keep buying them.

Re: Eaton Rear axle Spindles
Sounds familiar. Kinda like the old SM 420 4 speed transmissions. I sent a few to the melting pot myself and then in later years wished I had one for a Jeep project (the off road people love the old box because of it's extreme low 1st gear) . I then picked up 5 of em including a Military Surplus NOS that I have in my CJ 5.
I wish I could save everything, but that is what got me where I am and now it's all going...............for sale or otherwise. I passed up a few chances for eaton axles once and then returned and some Truck Puller grabbed every one in sight for the extreme low gears.

The more something gets thrown out the more valueable the survivors become.I`m no pack rat,but I like obsolete stuff.

Re: Eaton Rear axle Spindles
I know that even galled spindles can be saved with a speedi-sleeve. They are pricy, but can be worthwhile...I helped put one on a 14 bolt at my old job. That axle is still workin, and that was nearly 5 years ago we did that job.
